Nice beach and fishing pier, lots of restaurants, pretty laid back place. Not far from historical Savannah. It is *not* Myrtle Beach - a lot more laid back than that. 8)
We went down to Savannah back in November and took a side trip to Tybee Island. It was a very nice looking beachy area. Lots of little shops, restaurants. We ate lunch at Paula Deens brothers restaurant, Uncle Bubba's. The restaurant is on the way out to Tybee Island, i guess on the outskirts of Savannah. If you go there and love oysters, go ahead and order the chargrilled oysters, there is nothing like them in the world!! The road out to Tybee Island is a very narrow 2 lane rd, and there are warning signs that the road can become covered in water at high tide in the low spots. I think it was about a 20 minute ride from downtown Savannah. At several points on the road out there, my GPS showed my car in the water, even the GPS lost the road...LOL.
It didn't look upscale at all, not ritzy or glitzy, just down-home beachy kind of place. A few little stores, nothing like Wings or Eagles on every corner. Some antique places, little seafood shack looking restaurants. I think it would be a great escape for the person who wants to be a beach recluse, but Savannah is close enough to go and do "entertainment" stuff if you wanted to.
Tybee is a great place. make sure you check out two places there. The Crab Shack, and order the low country boil...it's an institution.. and check out Fannie's on the beach...with a nice deck to overlook the beach and drink some brews while you people watch. Go prepared to relax. Enjoy!
A friend of mine from Oregon flew out to visit while we were living in Atlanta and made a trip to Savannah for the weekend. LOVED it... Tybee Island was nice. You have to experience the Crab Shack and feed the alligators. We had such a great time.
Been there and it's great to do a Savannah/Tybee long weekend. Very laid back. Low country boil is a must. Definately worth it if you don't like touristy places. We climbed thte lighthouse on Tybee and in Savannah, the huge ships going down the river are REALLY COOL.
Was there in April I actually just went there in April. It was lovely. There's a ton to do, the people are friendly, it's extremely close to Savannah. I highly recommend it.
I too recommend Tybee and the Crab Shack as well. There are a couple of Civil War Forts that are on the way out to Tybee. Fort Pulaski and maybe Fort Jackson (can't remember this one's name definitely). Fort Pulaski is very large & has some great trails to walk also. It is a cool place to go. You can't go wrong with Tybee or Savannah.
Love Tybee. I've been there several times- very laid back, beautiful sunsets, nice pier. There's no law against beer/liquor on the streets (except in a bottle). YOu can walk into any restaurant/bar and get a frozen drink (or a beer or anything else) to go, walk around the shops, ride your bike, sit on the beach, etc. Have fun.
I went to Savannah in April, spent part of a day on Tybee. It was beautiful and seemed very relaxing.
