If the shelter is so full of cats, then perhaps they need to rethink their elitist, control-obsessive manner of deciding who gets to be "allowed" to adopt. I can't tell you how many people I know that would have made wonderful fur-face parents, but were either turned down for stupid reasons, or harassed for personal information that was totally irrelevant, to the point they walked out of the place. One woman wanted to adopt an adult cat (which are hard to find families for as it is.) She and her husband have a great home for an indoor cat, plenty of money, and already have one cat and a guinea pig, so they've proven themselves responsible. They refused to allow her to adopt the grown cat because when they called her vet to confirm that her other cat's shots were up to date, the vet told them that her other cat, who is 13 years old and can barely walk, did not get his rabies shot this spring. He is old, cannot move well due to arthritis, and is a totally indoor cat, and even her vet attested to the fact that due to the cats age and health, he did not see this as a problem. Still, they refused to allow her to adopt. I myself tried to adopt a kitten several years ago, but they refused to let me have the kitten because they couldn't find my house deed online! 1) I went home and found the info online no problem. 2) why should they care whether or not I own my home or rent it?!?!? And look at what happened with Ellen Degeneres. She adopted a dog, but it didn't work out. However, she found a perfect home for the dog where he was well cared for and loved, by people she knows personally. When they found out, the control-freak adoption agency demanded the dog back instead of allowing the dog to stay in his forever home that had been found. The SPCA and many of these alleged "animal advocates" have gone way overboard when it comes to adoptions. Then they complain because not enough people are adopting. They are control-freaks and their "criteria" is unreasonable and irrational. If these so-called "animal advocates" were as concerned about finding homes for these animals as they claim to be, they wouldn't be turning down good homes for stupid reasons, and they wouldn't be taking animals out of perfectly good homes just because they didn't get to make the decision. I think it's sickening.
I agree with most of what Mags is saying. My sister, who is one of the most caring pet owners I know, was turned down by the SPCA in her town because she told them the cat would be allowed outdoors. My cats are strictly indoors, but there are certainly some healthy, happy cats that live in and out. So we got her one of the numerous "free" cats you see advertised everywhere and he's currently being spoiled rotten. I got my dog from friends because I just didn't feel like the hassle and I knew EXACTLY where she came from and how she had been raised prior to my getting her. I think the SPCA and other's like them have their heart in the right place, but sometimes can't see the forest for the trees. There are plenty of good pet-owners out there that get turned down. There isn't a "perfect" home for every pet.
Magnolia, I believe the reason they care if you own or rent is because a lot of pets come back from renters due to the fact that they aren't really supposed to have pets and their landlord finds out, or whatever. I know of someone that happened too. I would think though that the place adopting the pet out could remedy this problem by having the tenant get written permission from the land lord.
That's ridiculous. A renter is no more likely to get rid of a pet than a homeowner. I cannot fathom them thinking it's better for a homeless animal to remain homeless, rather than take a chance and allow the pet to go home with a renting family. So they will deny an adoption for a homeless pet, and make that pet remain homeless....so they can avoid the pet possibly becoming homeless?!?!? It's a power play and one that the animals are suffering for.
While I dont agree with everything the shelters do around here regarding adoption, I do understand where they are coming from. The SPCA is computerized, so they can keep track of the reasons people return an animal they adopted, or reasons they surrender in the first place. SO many animals were ending up at the shelter due to landlords threatening to evict them when they found out they have an animal. Some were due to breed restrictions. (some apartments have weight limits, or don't allow certain breeds of dogs) so prior to approving an adopter they call the landlord to verify it would be ok. If you live in a rental that allows pets then it is fine.
I live in a house that I own. They refused me because the stupid chick that handled my application apparently doesn't know how to use the Wake County tax site, and couldn't pull up my deed. Again...which is better: Keep a homeless animal homeless. or Give it a good home, knowing that there is always a chance it may become homeless once again, but probably not. (a risk that is with any pet owner due to illness, death, etc.)
Of course they may also be afraid you would treat the animal like you would treat a liberal!
Then again, I don't think animals have a political leaning. Whoever has the best food and the softest sleep-spot is who they will lean toward.
Mags is spot-on. We have had this discussion in the past. I too was treated like a criminal by Petsmart years ago, because I mentioned that cats like to go outside. From there I could see the discussion was going downhill, as the lady covered in cathair got uppity with me. Oh, and my yard was not fenced in - as if that would stop a cat. <rolls eyes> So, I decided to have a few more kids instead... they can't stop me from doing that. Hmmm. Cats or people, cats or people.
Don't even get me started on how freakin' long it took me to adopt mt Lisa-Marie from the Wake Co. SPCA. One of the volunteers was trying to convince me to climb the outside fence and let her hand the pup over to me! I said NO! I want them to be sure it's a good fit but come one PEOPLE! How many get put down a month?!?!? Oh, and BTW, that's my poor, abused Lisa-Marie is my avatar. She looks pitiful and abused, huh?
