If, and a big if, she had students around her in public, maybe. But just an evening out with friends, nope her business. Again, no one has specified what the racial slur was, or by what race, etc.
My boys (14 and 16) and I were at a sports bar a few weeks ago having dinner and one of the coaches from my youngest's school came in with some others and my son was more concerned that the coach would see him than he was with seeing a coach in a bar. I have seen a few of both of my kids teachers out a nightclubs/bars. They seemed to be embarassed that one of the parents saw them. It didn't really bother me because I had seen them in "action" in class and they were (sure they still are) very very good teachers. I really don't care what the teachers do outside of school as long as it doesn't impact my and others kids in the classroom....like still being high or drunk when they show up for work.
Not saying its OK, but I don't think its something someone should lose a job for. They are off the clock, they may make mistakes or poor judgements, but that doesn't mean they deserve firing.
It deserves attention from the one who was offended by it, but not necessarily by an employer when the employee is not at work and/or the comment is not having an influence on the job.
I don't think someone should be fired for being at a KKK meeting as long as they don't express those feeling on the job while being paid. Who judges who has the right racial attitude to keep a job??? Slippery slope when one starts being the judge.
that might be a bit extreme...... Saying you don;'t like something or someone is one thing, saying you support violence and zero tolerance is another Heck, there may be a few card carrying members in the Johnston county and Wake County school system for all I know, but that's the point - I don't know and don't care to ....but they're probably everywhere ....As long as they are not preaching hatred and such to my kid I guess....., I am ok/ It's the old - keep your opinions to yourself thing.
10 semester hours is referring to college courses. That would be equivalent to a lot of time. I says 10 semester hours or 15 renewal credits. In order to receive one renewal credit a teacher must be in a workshop for 10 hours. 10 times 15 is where the 150 came from.
I agree with Ken, and do you all recall the myspace thread we had going a few years ago - when we were viewing HS kids pages from the area - they specified they were in class posting from school.
That would still be unacceptable to me. I think the "reclaiming" of words is tacky & ignorant, not to mention ghetto & trashy.
So what if an algebra teacher is going to a meeting that advocates the destruction of the United States? On his own time, not being paid, do the parents decide then he's not patriotic enough to teach algebra and fire him? Wonder how much better the school system will be when teachers are retained by popular vote of the parents and if they agree with their views.
No, just low-class IMO. I want my kids to have more respect for themselves. Imagine how proud I would be if my daughters referred teach other as hooker or skank.
