Ok all you vet wannabe's . . . my 10 week old kitty has fleas. I'm going to Petsmart after work to get something to put on her. Can anybody recommend anything that would be ok for her since she is so young?

    Thanks!

PS/ Is it Pets Mart or Pet Smart? :jester: I never know how to make out the check.

Kellbell, you really should know better by now. I'll say it for the 101st time . . . I don't fart, I poot and yes there is a difference. A poot is much quieter and less smellier and more ladylike than a fart.

Now please people, get your facts straight!!!

Do you just spray it on the kitty, or can you spray it on furniture, etc?

I've heard that Advantage is gentle enough to use on young kittens, and I remember someone posting one time about using a white vinegar/water dip for killing fleas too. I don't recall what the ratio of water to vinegar was though - maybe you could find it on a Yahoo search. But, it certainly can't hurt to call the vet you've made the appt with and see what they say.

You can spray it on them and the environment. (well I do, not sure if it says to on the bottle)

Since she is so young you might not want to use any topical sprays/powders/treatments just yet. I would recommend giving her a bath with Dawn dishwashing soap. I know it sounds crazy, but it works. I used to be involved in animal rescue and I would have all kinds of fleabitten animals dropped off on my door. I always gave them a bath with Dawn before bringing them in the house and if old enough treated them after the bath, but if they were under 4-6 months I just used the Dawn and since I did not have fleas in the house they never got re-infested. It is safe to use on them.

Or you can use the garlic, yeast, canned food thing - i assume it works on cats as well as dogs.

I've used that too, when one of mine got here, she was eat up with fleas, one bath in Dawn, and they were gone. I don't have fleas in my house. I am putting the puppy on the preventative, to make sure she doesn't bring any in from the yard to the cats.

You guys can't be serious. You want me to give a CAT a BATH? That would go over like a fart in a phone booth!

I can be done, just be prepared with LOTS of bandaids. I speak from experience. You need two people too.

Maybe if you start bathing her now, while she's young - it won't be so traumatic (for her or you!).

I buy the Zodiac Spot On at Petsmart for my older cats. I used to use Frontline. It works just as well, but it does leave more of a wet spot. Frontline may be better for little kittens because of that reason. I know on kittens you only use half an applicator.

i talked tonite to a woman that works at a vet clinic, and she said that Frontline is approved for kittens as young as 6 weeks. She didn't say to use only 1/2 an application or anything, so I would definitely call the vet and ask.

I got my kittens as strays at like 2 weeks. They were extremely small. That may have been why I had to use 1/2 an applicator. Normally it has it on the box and it's all based on weight.

Yes, I am serious. It can be done. I did this on the kittens that I brought home and I was able to give them baths all through their adult lives until they passed away from old age. My cats actually would sit between the shower curtain and liner on the tub and would sometimes jump in when I was showering. Not to say that your kitten will be water lover like mine were. I think my guys were a bit odd if you ask me since they also played fetch.

Get someone to help you the first time, but if you give her a bath in Dawn and don't have any fleas in your house and she is going to be strictly indoors you will not have a flea problem.

    Good luck and happy bathing!
