I don't mean the two countries we have a mutual border agreement with. You know, those other countries that you need a passport to enter? And no you can't go to Canada and then fly to Spain without a US passport. If you remember last year there was some guy who tried that and was arrested and confined to a hospital.

You need a Passport to go to Canada.

    Only if you fly.

Delayed again, you will need one by other entry means in the summer of 2009!

I stand corrected. I checked the State Department and the CDC websites. Vaccinations are not required unless the country you are travelling to is know to have a break out, and then you only need the vaccine to cover just the disease in question.

Then tell me I'm wrong after June 1, 2009.

Sorry, I meant to insert in a "You are right" but I thought it might be obvious after my post!

I'm really confused. We are going on an Alaskan cruise next month which departs from Seattle. We were told by the cruise line that we had to have our passports since we will be entering Canada. So does that mean we just wasted all that money paying for three passports that we really didn't need?

Are you stopping in Skagway and going into the Yukon? If so, Canada stops the excursion bus at the border and checks passports. If you are flying out of Vancouver, you have to have it at the airport.

We just came back, and we miss the wonderful weather! It was cool, no humidity. Don't forget to pack bug repellent if you are going off ship at any time...we took mosquito wipes...easier than a spray!

Technically you will need the Passport to get back into the United States, not to get to Canada. Hopefully you already put in for your Passport, it takes sometime to process them, I would follow the Cruse Lines advice before I would listen to Clif or myself on this, but that link I gave should answer some questions.

I always admit to being wrong, when I am wrong (such as I did in post #66 of this very thread)

    db,

Thanks. I have taken people's advice and tried to shorten mine since I do realize that people don't really have the time to read long posts. Learn something new everyday.

ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: All Americans traveling by air outside the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States . This requirement will be extended to sea travel (except closed loop cruises), including ferry service, by the summer of 2009. Until then, U.S. citizens traveling by sea must have government-issued photo identification and a document showing their U.S. citizenship (for example, a birth certificate or certificate of nationalization), or other WHTI compliant document such as a passport card for entry or re-entry to the U.S. Sea travelers should also check with their cruise line and countries of destination for any foreign entry requirements.

Applications for the new U.S. Passport Card are now being accepted. Based on current projections, we expect to begin production of the passport card in June 2008 and be in full production in July 2008. The card may not be used to travel by air and is available only to U.S. citizens. Further information on the U.S. Passport Card is available at http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html and upcoming changes to U.S. passport policy can be found on the Bureau of Consular Affairs web site at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html. We strongly encourage all American citizen travelers to apply for a U.S. passport well in advance of anticipated travel. American citizens can visit travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on how to apply for their passports.

No, we leave out of Seattle, then on to Glacier Bay, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Victoria, Canada and back to Seattle.

Thanks for the bug spray tip! I might pm you for more tips and info!

Actually, we got our passports a couple of months ago. I'm just saying after all the money we spent, somebody had better ask to see them! :boxing: :jester:

We had to show our passports to get into Canada, but not to return to US. Border officials did not even board our bus as we re-entered! When we flew out, we had to show our passports going through Canadian security at the airport and then through US customs at the Vancouver airport before we boarded our flight. (To save time at major US airports, they have a US customs area for declarations in some Canadian airports.)

Enjoy your cruise! Ours was fabulous. (Ooops! Kinda forgot Weight Watchers that week and now have to re-lose three pounds. --Always take the stairs on the ship -- it helps a lot when presented with those incredible foods!)
