I'm redoing my kid's rooms and need some ideas. The boys will be sharing a room, and it will be in a gone fishing theme. I have the bed on order (finally!) and the bedding on order (green camo, per their request), and the curtains will be some sort of bamboo type, not sure exactly what, hanging from some sort of fishing rod type material, hubby's taking care of that for me. We're going to either faux-paint or put up log-type wallpaper, getting prices on those things next week, and putting up some rustic type panels on the lower half of the walls, so that will look cool. Basically their room will look like a cabin. But I'm looking for some wall hangings online and not finding anything. I guess I could probably go to the flea market, but that's not much fun with 3 kids, so really don't want to do that. Everything I find online is way expensive, and looks too "nice" for what I want. And I don't want it to be cheaply made either though, since it will be in a room with 3 boys. Any suggestions on stores I can look at? I don't want pottery barn prices, and couldn't find any ebay stores, not sure if I was looking at the right place though.
Are you crafty? For my daughter's room, we bought a couple of canvases from Micaheal's. We painted them with Acrylic paint then glued on some wooden letters, shapes, wooden art, etc. It actually came out really cute! You can find some great shapes/artwork/etc at Michaels. All the decorations in her room cost less than $30 for everything. (Canvas-$2.99-9.99; Paint -$.59 bottle; Shapes-$.29-.99) We really enjoyed it too. She also bought some stencils, decoupage kit, scrapbook paper, etc and is now working on other artwork things for the guest room. Very creative!
Hi again. I just had an idea. Get some twine, nail it to the wall and maybe have some sort of fake fish at the end of it, kind of like a fishing rod. You can find all sorts of "ocean/fishing" things at Michaels & AC Moore, I'm going my guest room in "coastal NC" deco and I felt like I hit the jackpot there! Also, here's a coupon. Print out as many as you need, I think its one per item. http://wow-coupons.com/all-printable-retail-coupons.php You can use AC Moore coupons at Michaels and vice versa. Just a tip! Good luck!
Years back we decorated my daughter's room in an ocean theme. I used netting over the blinds and put items such as shells and whatnots all over the netting. Things she would find at the beach. I had someone paint a manatee looking at her, an octopus around a door, different fish and dolphin jumping out of the water. We had family give her items for her room for special occasions such as a ship's wheel, buoy, etc. I even found a fish shaped table that was painted like a fish for her room. With money tight in today's world I would suggest cutting items out of magazines or using stencils to do something like a mural. The 3d effect is way cool. Maybe hang an old fishing rod on one wall with the (brain freeze) the cord hanging down into something that looks like water with fish around. I believe I ordered some stick on things over the internet (Oriental Trading) which worked out wonderful. They had different fish, bubbles, you know things like that, that would stick on the wall...way cool. Maybe an old fishing cap could be hung somewhere...look in the bait shops and places like that. Let me think some more on this as I just love this stuff. Good Luck! Sherry
OK...I probably should have mentioned I AM NOT CRAFTY! I could do a net with stuff in it, but that's about it! No stenciling or stuff like that for me! Any other ideas??:jester:
We still have some of the stuff if you would like to look at it for the boys' room. I don't think we will use it again and I just could not get rid of it when she was ready to redecorate. Would like to see it used by someone who would enjoy it like she did. We may even have some of the sticky bubbles and fish if we dig around. Send me a PM if you are interested and we will search around and put it all in one spot for you guys to look at. Sherry
Sherry - I love the idea of hanging an old fishing pole on the wall, never thought of that! I might want to take a look at that stuff as well.
Sounds like someone could use my "Don't Worry Be Happy" singing fish plack! Well I am sorry you can't have it.
No problem. Just PM me and let us get it all together. That way you and the boys can come over and take a look at all of it. Just remembered that we have some great fish mobiles as well. I put small hooks up and hung them. See, that is why we need to look around and get all of it together for you before you come over. Let me know when you want to come and we will try to get as much as possible together before then. All items like the fishing pole can be purchased at garage sales or flea markets as well. I think a fishing cap with different hooks, hung up high so other kids don't touch it, would look great. Don't forget the ceiling. I put up those glow in the dark stars but my daughter did not like them so I decided to put small items in the corners of the ceiling. I love stuff like this because it is so much fun and the kids never forget. Sherry
my kids didn't like the glow in the dark stuff either. I don't think I'll do the stickers on the walls either, never worked good for me. I think we actually have an old fishing pole that broke or doesn't work, something like that. Probably wouldn't be hard to find something like that...I'll let you know...thanks.
JR's down by Smithfield Outlets There's a place down by the Smithfield Outlets called JR's (I think). It's where they sell cigarettes cheap. Anyhow, it's a really big place with tons of 'homey' decorations, anything from country to dolls. They have inexpensive decorations for almost everything. I'm SURE you can find stuff there. Enjoy!
What about Carolina Pottery, they have alot of home decor stuff, cheap. You could make that in the same trip as JR's.
I forget about JR's. Although last time I went there looking for rustic stuff a couple months ago, it was all beachy stuff for summertime. But they might have some fishy stuff, I was looking for things for my cabin, bears.
I had my old house done in all kinds of fishing decorations that we don't use anymore. I even had the cutest lamp that's bottom looked like a fishing creel. If I can dig up all the stuff you are more than welcome to it. I just redid my son's room and had someone paint a mural on his wall that matches his bedroom set and it turned out great. It sounds like you have some really great ideas so far.
Some of it, yes. But the price is so awesome it really doesn't matter. Use the other items as teacher's gifts or something. Sherry
I was in JR's recently and they had a butt load of fishing/beach items. Really good prices. Good luck. Stuff like this is fun. Sherry
I paint murals ...... I have pictures of what I've done in the past if you want to see them. Just an option, but I'd have to know what you want to quote you a price.
