Ok, this is the Harnett County girl coming out in me when I ask this question, but here it goes....

Do you guys know where I can get a bushel of SHELLED Dixie Lee Peas in the area and how much? Can not find them at Porters or the Farmer's Market? Last year we bought them in Dunn for $64.00 but I need some more this year.

Ken's Produce on Hwy 50 going toward Garner. 779-4765 I called a couple of weeks ago and got my name on their list. I get dixie lee peas and butterbeans from them every year shelled already. Picked up my bushel of butterbeans today. They still don't have my dixie lees ready yet. Call them and see!

We got some from Wilson's Farm Market in Wilson's Mills last week. 919-934-6918. We are on their call list every year for shelled Dixie Lee peas.

I can't remember what the peas were last year.

I paid $30 for my butterbeans today though. It seems the butterbeans were a couple of dollars cheaper than last year.
That's one thing I will glady splurge on.....fresh peas and butterbeans. There's nothing like having them all through the winter to eat.

Okay, I'll bite on this one. What are Dixie Lee Peas? Just asked my mother and she's never heard of them either. Give it up.

"Dixie Lee" is a variety of pea. Like "Crowder", etc. Like different varieties of corn; ie "silver queen", etc.

Ha ha ha..... And dixie lee's have the best taste yet they are still small. I do not like the texture of big beans/peas! :)

Have dinner one night with dixie lee peas, silver queen corn (off the cob with butter salt & pepper in a frying pan) squash & Onions with butter in a frying pan, and fresh tomatoes!! Top it with a slice of pig picking cake and you are in JoCo or Harnett County Heaven! LOL LOL LOL

And yes I do eat this and still know how to go to Second Empire and order! HA HA HA

Dixie Lees are my fave! I past Porter's this evening and they had Dixie Lees on the sign by the road...maybe they just got them. I have no idea how much they are bc we didn't stop.

We had fresh fried okra, fresh butterbeans, fresh corn on the cob and bar-b-qued pork ribs. Oh yeah, also had fresh cucumbers in vinegar. All we were missing was the pig picking cake.

Well by the time I finished freezing my butterbeans, putting up a couple of quarts of tomatoes, freezing 2 quarts of bell pepper strips, it was kinda late. Didn't think anybody would want to be eating at 9:00 on a Monday night.

FYI... Porter Farms has 1lb bags of Dixie Lee's shelled for $5, I just got a couple. They have in the shell for $1.50/lb or $24/bushel (I think, don't quote me on the bushel price.)

Time to plan out our supper.

Thanks Ready! I'll keep that in mind. Don't know what Ken's is charging for his Dixie Lees. Guess I'll find out when they call me. If it's too much I might tell them never mind. I love fresh veggies but I also love a deal!
