While I understand your point, we have had fenced in yards without success. We have used the underground system for 15 years. Our dogs are properly trained with this system, we use the sound/vibration method of training, same system my husband uses as part of the training he does for hunting. This is not an overnight training method, it can take several weeks up to several months but is very effective if done properly. We DO NOT SHOCK our dogs, the warning signal and vibration method have worked for us. If the method is applied properly you do not need the use of the shock. The level that we use is a very small initial buzzing sound, very harmless, no more than your cell phone on vibration. These are very intelligent dogs, its a matter of conditioning for them. We have hunting dogs and if you've ever owned any type of retriever/setter you'd now that they're escape artist, they will dig under or crawl over any fence, further more our dogs are never left outside alone and unattended with this system, it is not a babysitter but a system that allows a variety of freedom that our dogs need to keep them in top hunting form. I know people that think crating a dog is cruel and unusual punishment, not me, its a great method for housebreaking and keeping a young pup safe but people have issues with this as well. It comes down to doing things in the correct manner for whatever method you choose to use. As I stated, our dogs do not ever get shocked, they hear the beeps and turn around exactly the way they were trained by my husband, heck 99.9% of the time they have learned their boundaries within a few days and the collar goes for months before you ever hear a beep, we have to put the date on our calendar when the batteries need to be changed.
 Your "Mine is the only way" position is the reason most of us think that PETA members are so full of crap. I am sure that you would prefer to see my very Happy/Healthy* dog executed at the pound rather than pretty much ruling my household and enjoying a beautiful yard that he pretty much has the run of on his out door run. *Per our Veterinarian
I sure didnt take it as ITB was calling dogs children. It seems to me ITB was stating that the authoritites would be called if an animal OR child was seen being abused. I would do the same. Plus, from what I've read, ITB is talking about constant, day in, night out tethering. Why do some take it so personal? Maybe I missed something. I don't understand why folks can't have a difference of opinion without being called names or insulted. So sad. I must say, I believe that if a dog only knows about being on a leash while outdoors, and never runs free, yes, he will be happy. He knows no different way of life. But, if allowed freedom, they would never turn back to the leash as their first choice. Don't get me wrong. There are times a dog needs to be leashed for it's own safety. And if previously abused or living in a cage in a pound was their previous exsistance, then a loving home which includes a limited number of hours on a long chain/run is a definate and huge improvement to what they had. It is to each his own, of course. And as always, this is simply my opinion, nothing more.
Irrational in my thinking that a dog on a tow chain, outside with no food or water anywhere in sight is considered abuse? No, I doubt most humans with any type of compassion in their hearts would consider this OKAY and in the norm for a dog or any other living being. I have a brother in-law that is having to consistently go over to his neighbors house to water the dog that's tethered because the dog is consistently knocking over his water with the tether, if not for my brother in-law the dog would more than likely be dead. Abuse is abuse and I feel it is my duty as a caring, compassionate person to report abuse. I never said dogs where like children, you said that. Although, now that I think about it I've pretty much set rules and boundaries for my kids as well as for my dogs, rules are rules anyway you look at it. Once again, my opinion is that tethering for extended (8 hrs. etc.) periods of time and life long situations, all kinds of weather etc. is not something I agree with, this is my opinion and if in anyway it is in my powers to provide a better life for my dogs then so be it, if it means maybe for one summer we don't go on such a big vacation but instead spend that amount of money for a fenced in area for the dogs, this is what I'd do. To each his own.
Irrational nut? Me? You believe that it what my post showed me as? I hardly think so. Amazing that you can get that from my post. No need to challenge me, I have already read the posts. I never stated you advocated putting a dog on a tether for 24/7. Never even came close. I simply stated my interpretation of ITB's comment in which you interpreted much differently. Then I went on to state my totally independant view point on tethering.
I'm laughing my a** off at this time. Why should I give an apology for MY OPINION that was stated as such, my beliefs, my values and once MY OPINION on a particular subject. I didn't call you names or make derogatory comments about you and Hught, just stated my opinion. What part of that don't YOU get. I have been no different than anyone else on this forum about other subjects when it comes to opinions, everyone has one. This is what is usually done on this forum. Just to help you out here. Apology? Hope your not holding your breath or have your dog tethered while your waiting. Thanks for the laugh today. Opinion; A personal view, attitude, or appraisal.
When your opinion stated on a public website is that I am an animal abuser I think you crossed the line. It is fine that you have an opinion, but when you are lacking evidence you should think before posting such accusations or one day you might find yourself on the wrong end of a libel suit.
My animals are a part of my family (the way they should be), so we had a privacy fence built so they can go outside safely and securely. Before we had a fence, I leash walked him every time he had to go outside. Otherwise they are laying upside down sleeping on the couches or bed. If you're dog is on a runner then what prevents another loose dog from jumping on it and hurting it? Now I grew up on a farm with 20+ acres so we did let the dogs roam freely when they were let outside. We also had a wolf mix that was chained at the barn (the longest, thickest chain I've ever seen) for protection of the show horses, hogs, etc. when we were not home. He'd kill any living dog, fox, etc. that go within his reach, so he did his job. Farms are different than neighborhoods IMO when it comes to animals being contained.
Same question could be asked of INTHEBUFF. She utilizes an electric fence which might keep your dog in but will not keep others out, and in my experience with Beagles, once they get on the other side of the fence will keep them out. Also the only times I had a problem with dogs attacking my dog was while I was walking him on his leash. The one experience with a large mean Dalmatian attacked and I had the put the 30 pound Beagle on my shoulders to keep him from being attacked. Of course that left me exposed and he did make an attempt or two. A few months later a neighbor pushing his infant in a carriage and walking his dog on a leash was targeted by the same dog against his dog. He grabbed the dog and I the infant and did our best to chase him off (the Dalmatian is no longer in the neighborhood). Based on my anecdotal evidence the worst thing you could do is walk your dog!
You are right-the question would apply to anyone with a fence that isn't physical. How do you keep other animals out? I had that experience in my other neighborhood when I was walking my bully, the neighbors free roaming german sheppard jumped him-the neighbor came running, but by that time I had took my 3 inch heeled boots and kicked their dog in the face and got him off my little boy. I told them then the next time that dog comes in my yard and threatens my dog in his own yard while I'm walking him (We had almost 2 acres) that I'd kill it with the pistol. Guess what they started containing their animal after then. Thank goodness that in my neighborhood now people don't let their animals roam (except for a few cats), but then again I don't leash the dogs except for when I'm taking them out front to go for a ride in the car.
Good point about the electric fence not keeping other dogs out. Before we built our privacy fence my big dog during the day was on a run that ran almost the length of the yard and with a chain that pretty much gave him access to most of the back yard and of course he had shelter and food and water at all times. One time someone else's dogs came into our yard and went after him, luckily we had gotten home and were able to protect him (those dogs were gotten rid of soon thereafter as they were not contained and apparently were going after some children in the neighborhood too so i heard). Anyway i posted on here about it and got shot down for even having him on a run because other dogs could get to him - wish i had thought of the comeback back then about the electric fence being no better
Then you need to educate yourself on the law. I never, ever once personally accused you or anyone else on this forum of abuse. Do yourself a favor and REREAD. Show me where I accused you and Hught of animal abuse, show where I made the clear statement "you, polenta or you Hught are animal abusers". It ain't there bud. I clearly stated my opinion and once again will. I do not believe in 24/7 tethering, I feel it is clearly not the best situation for a dog, IMHO. You just can't stand for someone else to have a different opinion or to disagree with you. As for libel, you need to show me where I have performed this on this forum, because if stating a different opinion other than yours is libel than I guess we are all guilty. Try barking up another tree why don't ya.
Your right, this does not keep other dogs out, but we are very fortunate to have over 7 acres with 3 zoned for the dogs and as I stated before, we are outdoor people and someone is for the most part out with them, training and exercising etc.
So those who are fortunate to have lots of land are not animal abusers in your opinion but those who don't are? OK, just wanted to get that straight!
Slander refers to a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report, while libel refers to any other form of communication such as written words or images. Don’t worry, at least at this time I have no intention of suing you, you would have to get a lot worse than the crap you posted. I think it is cute that you would assume that just because you didn’t state “Hught is an animal abuser” that you would think someone would not come to that conclusion based on your series of posts in this thread (that is if they choose not to use their brain). It would be like my discussing how you always seem to be around underage children that aren’t your own – but then again that is just my opinion.
Well, once again I ask you to show me where I stated your name in the same sentence as abused. In fact I don't recall calling anyone names or accusing anyone of abuse. The topic of abuse was used in a generalized manner or do you not have enough education to realize the difference. I come from a family of lawyers, so you can threaten all you want and it will come to not. Your name has not be defamed in anyway and if that's the case than you are as guilty as anyone else on this forum. ONCE AGAIN, SHOW ME WHERE IT IS WRITTEN OR INTENDED FOR THE ASSUMPTION THAT I HAVE DEFAMED YOUR NAME, CAUSE YOU HARM OR WHERE YOU HAVE LOST FACE/MONENTARILY IN THIS ISSUE. YOU HAVE NOT BEEN CALLED AN ABUSER. REREAD. I even at one point stated that I have no problem with people that use tethering for short periods of time. Where as I and others were called and titled as nuts. So, sue me and see where it gets you, that is if you could find any grounds for it. YOU CANNOT SUE ON OTHERS ASSUMPTIONS. If that were the case this whole forum would be in trouble. Like I said, polenta was the name caller "nuts" so I guess I could sue him for the name calling as well. BACK OFF BIG BOY, BECAUSE I DON'T SCARE EASILY. GET A GRIP. THIS IS A DISCUSSION BOARD WITH MANY MEMBERS, WITH MANY OPINIONS AND NOT EVERYONE WILL AGREE. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.
Just how immature are you. I was being nice to you and just giving information as to our situation. Gave some suggestions and you have made this a personal issue. I have a sister with an extremely small yard, lives in a gated community so you can imagine how small the yard and she uses the invisible fence system. Because I do not agree with tethering and because you use the method, you have taken this personally. Get over it.
