If a wasp stings you does it die? And what's up when there are a bunch flying around on top of the grass? Thanks

No, that's only bees. The wasps flying close to the ground are ground wasps (also known as Yellow Jackets). They don't just fly close to the ground, that's where their nest is. (And they get very agitated when you run a lawn mower over their nest, trust me.)

Allergic to them, so I never try to find out! If it stings me, I'll be the dead one!

The ones flying close to ground could be yellow jacket or cicada killers. Yellow jackets will sting. Cicada killers look aggressive, but are harmless.

Hopefully I will not get close enought to tell the difference. Where they go, I head in the opposite direction.

The ones flying close to the ground that look like wasps are the dirt dobbers. They are actually hunting for spiders. Then, they build their nests. They're those long columns made of dirt. If you knock one down, you'll see all the spiders in them that they caught while flying close to the ground. You can actually walk through the dirt dobbers and they won't sting you. We have them in our front yard. NOW, these are totally different from ground yellow jackets. Those buggers will sting you. Remember a few weeks ago, when Nik got attacked by a swarm? The yellow jackets that have hives on the ground sense the vibrations on the ground that you are coming and then attack. I've learned a lot about bees and such over the last few weeks--LOL. Good luck.

But I thought Dirt Dobbers were more black? Whereas yellow jackets are smaller in size and yellow/black, wasp seem to have more of a black/red to them. Now, ya want to talk about something mean, Bore Hornets scare the crap outa me, anything that can drill a hole in wood like they do deserves respect and a clear distance.

What are these skinnyish blue/black ones that keep getting in my house? Seems I will open the door for a second, and sure enough everyone is running around freaking out - there is a big ole wasp in the house!

Are you talking about the huge hornets? We have a real problem here at the house with European Hornets. They are much bigger than regular hornets...some have a body the size of 1/2 my pinky finger.

European hornets are attracted to light, so if you have a porch light on at night, and one is anywhere near, it will come right in a door opened only a second!

The ones out side are black, hope they are harmless. Can I get rid of them. The one in the house went up my pant leg and stung me, it hurt but left no marks or pain. I thought I killed it but can't find it so I just kept vacuuming the rug.
