Sherry you have to remember, the things we say may be thought of differently by others. Even if you don't think you don't think you have over stepped certain bounds others might. People take things the way they perceive them. I am not saying whether I agree with what he said or not, that is an opinion I will keep to myself.

no, we are not awaiting the facts. if it's true all over the state, and in wake county, why would it not be true in joco?

his extra comments about breeding like rabbits and mexicans being trashy are his opinion, based on his experiences i guess. so, he made a couple of statements out of frustration. he shouldn't have made those comments, and he has apologized. but that doesn't change the facts regarding latinos and drunk driving and illegals. some people here have taken those comments and made the leap in logic that he is a racist who unfairly targets mexicans. i just don't understand that logic.

    db,

Thank you. Yes, we and others are awaiting the audit facts to see if any profiling has been going on or discrimination in our area because of those remarks, not because of the statistics. I applaud those who will wait on the facts of that audit.

    Good morning,
    Sherry

ok, you're waiting for specific joco facts. cool. if they turn out to be similar to the stats from all over the state, and from neighboring counties such as wake, will you concede that maybe there actually is a problem and put this much effort into stamping out illegal drunk-driving latinos?

i guess the reason i'm continuing to argue this with you is that you have gone to great lenghts to call for the removal of the sherriff based on a couple of comments he made, but you are not putting forth a similar amount of energy to call for the removal of illegal immigrants from our community, who have been shown by statistics to be causing the community a specific problem.

I don't think you and I are talking apples to apples. You are talking about statistics regarding illegal immigrant crimes statewide and I am talking about statistics on profiling and discrimination in our county. Two completely opposite things. I don't want him removed...I want to see facts before making a decision. I do find his remarks bigoted and biased and his apology lacking. Now, his remarks to all for calm during the weekend vigil was a good first step. Employees follow the leader's example.

    Plain and simple:

    1. Everyone wait until an audit is done to see if profiling and/or discrimination is done in our area before making any decisions other than to reprimand our Sheriff.

    2. Sensitivity training and counseling for Steve as he is frustrated and seems burnt out.

    3. A guideline written as to who will speak on behalf of Johnston County citizens to media outlets.

    4. Full disclosure of the audit.

All other items should be addressed in detail by an independent panel. Not sure what all of this is going to cost the taxpayer but I hope it will help in the end.

Please show me the "great lengths to remove Steve" that I have gone to.

    Thanks,
    Sherry

actually, no, i'm not talking about illegal immigrant crimes statewide. those stats are strictly about latino drunk driving rates. the first paragraph is a statewide stat. the second is a stat from the next county over. they are relevant to this conversation in several ways. here it is again:

so i'll ask you again: if the audit you're waiting for shows that the percentage of drunk driving crimes for latinos is comparable to the same stats for neighborhing counties, will you admit that it's a problem? your argument sounds to me as if you are deflecting blame away from the criminals, and saying that it's not true and the only reason the stats show what they show is due to racism among law enforcement. the only way you'll prove that there's descriminatory targeting in joco is if the rate is significantly higher in joco vs the rest of the state, especially when compared to similar counties. if the percentages are in line and the problem is shown to exist, will you put this much effort into calling for independent reviews of the problem of latino drunk drivers killing joco citizens? even if there is profiling and discrimination in the joco sherriff's office, where's your outrage over all the people killed by illegal drunks?

and maybe i overstated what your intention is, but you haven't said a word about the real issue, or even admitted there is one. meanwhile, you have put forth a significant effort with regard to this conversation and all of it seems to have been directed towards proving that there is discrimination on behalf of the sherriff's department. while you complain that people are defending the sherriff's remarks, you don't seem to be bothered by the crimes. are you?

as simple as i can say it: you seem to be really upset that the sherriff made some off-color remarks, but you don't seem similarly upset about a real problem that we have that leaves innocent people dead.

I am upset about all sides but this Thread is about Steve's remarks, is it not? And I do see your stats but still would like for all sides to not place judgment until the audit is done. Is that too much to ask?

Not Liberal crap at all. Treating human beings with kindness and respect I hope is not just a Liberal point! Have you even read some of the remarks on the Forum?

I thought the JoCo stats had been posted on the other thread? Something like Hispanics make up 11% of the population and account for 1/3 of DUIs? Or perhaps that is an NC number in general. My point in posting Bizzell stating that he did not have (at least a year ago) actual numbers of Hispanic-involved crimes, was that maybe profiling was not part of the process.

Wow, this happen on Saturday! No mention of alcohol here but with or without it being involved, this kind of driving is completely uncalled for. With the multiple IDs/lack of IDs what you want to bet these are illegals?

It’s obvious our government won’t stop the illegals from coming here. Neither of the presidential candidates are even talking about it. Corporate America wants them here for the cheap labor. It’s corporate America that’s mainly financing each candidate. So you can forget about the border fence ever being build. It's really ashame our government won’t protect our borders, but we only have ourselves to blame. We keep putting the same old crap into office every time. Just think, has either party done anything to secure our borders. Sure they have their occasional photo op of busting a business or Bush acting like he was serious about building the fence. But if Bush was serious about securing the border he would hire more border agents and had properly financed the border fence. He made sure the Iraq war was properly financed. Recently the Minuteman group, who are trying to help get the border fence build and assisting border patrol agents in spotting illegal border crossings, were labeled vigilantes by President Bush. Why is Bush afraid of this group assisting an overwhelmed border patrol? Hmmm…makes you wonder.

And finally…We know exactly where one cow with mad-cow-disease is located among the millions and millions of cows in Canada, but we haven't got a clue as to where thousands of illegal immigrants and terrorists are located. Maybe we should put the Department of Agriculture in charge of immigration!

That looks like that was in front of the Clayton Post Office.

That's exactly where it ended. I remember reading about it on WRAL last weekend, before any information was released aside from "car chase ending after 30 minutes in Clayton".

And LETSGOEERS, that's what I'm screaming.

    Cleo..and eers...

You'll get no argument from me based on those last posts. That's why I say that we have to attack the demand for illegal labor as well as try ot restricting the supply. We reestrict the supply by building walls, etc. We attack the demand by firing up those businesses (of all sizes, not just the little guys) who hire them.
