We talked about it in the Pet Forum the other day. I just think it's crazy for them to act like it's bad for anyone with small kids to have these pets when it's really a few parents who don't know what soap and water are. But that's just me. We've had and continue to have all kinds of pets, including the turtle, and we've had no issues.

and that's it! wash thy hands! Remember a couple of years ago, when at the State Fair, the petting zoo, bacterial outbreak? yuck. it was simply a matter of letting children feed the animals and then getting some popcorn....with no stop in between.....:ack:

What a crock! When will busy body know-it-alls quit trying to stop kids from being kids? Kids have been catching, playing with (and usually torturing) snakes, lizards and all other manner of critters for eons and few, if any, have been seriously harmed. If people like these are to be believed, mankind should have killed himself off millennia ago.

Really, My 2 YO caught two lizards just this morning. We just washed her hands and now she is eating lunch. I caught a snake. :)

My son has had a few pet rats, he kept a bottle of hand sanitizer right next to the cage. I had pet rats as a teen. We had ducks, cat, dog, snakes, fish, bird. You name it. None of us ever got sick.

I would love to get a turtle, but I don't think you can buy one around here?

my sisters and I had turtles and hamsters and never got sick either. When my kids were younger and wanted these things, I said, sure you can have them, but you have to keep them at your Dad's.

We have our own little zoo going ourselves right now. 2 puppies, 1 cat, 1 snake, 1 bird and fish. My DD's have always had some kind of pet or another, including hamsters, at all times and we have never had any problems ourselves. Seems like people try to find something wrong with everything now days.

I think they just have to come up with something to justify their paychecks. It's so stupid!

Thanks! I think I will. Or maybe I will catch my own. I just need a website identifying the differences between snappers and box/painted, lest my new nickname be Lefty.

LOL! We are really enjoying our red-eared slider. She's grown from about the size of a 50 cent piece to as big as your hand in just over a year. I'll have to see if I can post of pic of her in a bit.

They're always walking across the road in the spring and summer. You could just jump out and grab one! Snappers are easy to spot. They have "beaks" and their tails are jagged. Very prehistoric looking.

Thanks! Believe it or not, she is very friendly. Eat right out of your fingers, tickels us when you walk by her aquarium and she starts splashing and swimming around to get your attention.
