Any recommendations for stops between here and Orlando? Looking for an afternoon outing to break up the drive or just some place to stop and stretch our legs or let the kids play. We may consider an overnight to break up the trip but prefer it be some where we can see or do something.
I say depending on the capacity of your tank on your vehicle, try and make it to Santee, SC. That's around mile marker 98 in SC on I-95. Then I suggest the last exit in GA before you get to FL, Kingsland. They have really cheap gas there usually. Then I would stop at the Daytona Beach exit on I-95 or go ahead and go the hour and a half or 2 hours to Orlando. I hope that helps somehow.
I agree that Savannah, GA would be a fun place to stop. Hilton Head, SC or Beaufort, SC could be fun also.
I will add if you stop at South of the Border you might as well let you hubby put his "boys" in the door jam of your car and slam the door shut. That would be more of an event than anything at the eyesore, waste of time. Savannah is good but its too far off I-95 for me, but to each his or her own. Paula Deen's restaurant is in Savannah of course too.
If you want to eat at Paula Deens, be prepared to wait in line, outside the restaurant for several hours. We've been to Savannah, its lovely. I would recommend it as a place to stop on the way to FL. But, if you want good food, look up Paulas brothers restaurant, Uncle Bubba's. We've eaten there, and its great food, and not near the wait for her restaurant. Savannah is about 20 minutes off 95. Even just to park for the afternoon and enjoy the riverfront area would be nice. After you get into FL, there is St. Augustine, just past Jacksonville. That is a very historic town and lots to do and see. just a few thoughts.....
Savannah...take exit 99 onto I-16 east and head downtown into Savannah. Between River street shopping and eating (Candy stores offer lots of free samples and Bernie's is an excellent oyster bar/dive) and street entertainment or City Market, about two blocks off River street at St Julian Square, there's plenty to see, eat, and do. Best seafood is actually at Tybee at the Crab Shack, advertised as "where the elite go to eat in their bare feet." Great seafood, huge portions, family friendly. Not unusual to see limo's parked besides cycles, and some of us greasy biker types sharing a long table with folks in formal wear. It's all about the food.
I vote Savannah, too! Best side-trip we ever made on a trip to Florida. We took the kids on a horse carriage ride for a historical tour. It was worth it! Fascinating history and beautiful historic area, and I would love to go back for more. And the kids really enjoyed the carriage ride so it was win-win for all of us. Then we grabbed lunch and peeked in a store or two and then hit the road again.
Hilton Head, SC is kinda out of the way and not THAT much to see or do for younger kids. We went to HH this summer, it was ok, but we liked our day trip to Savannah much better. 8) Are you a AAA member? They have trip tiks that will show you points of interest along your route. You may be able to get info from the website without being a member, but I'm not sure. www.aaacarolinas.com
