We are thinking of taking our 3 children (ages 4, 8 and 11) skiing for their first time. Actually, I'm not much of a skiier myself.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on where to go?

    Thanks!

Winterplace is a great family oriented, first-time ski area. It also offers tubing if your kids decide that skiing is really not for them. If you want beautiful scenery and don't mind the drive, Silver Creek ski area (I think it is now a part of Snowshoe) is very family friendly. This resort is located on top of the mountain as opposed to most, which are located at the bottom, which means if you stay there you can have some awesome views.

We are taking the children to Winter Place this winter for some snow tubing. We've never been so I cannot say how it is there. We chose to go there mostly because we get 4 hours of tubing for the same price most other places charge for 2 hours. Although ... now that the reservations are made I'm thinking 2 hours would have been plenty of time outside in the freezing cold

It's great to travel at non-peak times. It's one of the blessings of homeschooling. We schedule our school year to fit our family and opportunities rather than our family having to work around a school's calendar. We school year round which provides flexibility when we schedule our breaks. Plus we always try to combine our travels with educational field trips that tie into something we are studying.

What sane person would think it a good idea to strap sticks on their feet and slide down an icy mountain?

I skied (if you can call it that ) exactly once in my life. We lived near the Greenbrier in WVA (gorgeous!) and came down the slope, took a tumble and lost both skis and a boot! Never again! I'd like to try the snow tubing though.
