I have a 12 year old who wants to make things with his hands. He doesn't want anything that is to simple. Does anyone know where i can find a place to buy him some kits or the like.
Michael's at White Oak. They have all sorts of crafts, models, and what not. I believe they even have classes for kids where they get to make things. Mike
Hungates at Triangle Town Center is a hobby shop. They have lots of neat things. Any Radio Shack has kits and projects that kids can do too.
I tried there and the sales-person told me they didn't know what I was talking about. He wants to make things that last and are not color by number. Needless to say I walked out empty handed. Thanks
I have heard about them, I will have to check them out. I just HATE going to Raleigh. Never thought of Radio Shack. Now I just got to get rid of the kid. (No school today)
I think there were some hobby shops listed in a thread Abdulina started a few weeks back when she was looking for places that sell trains and railroad stuff for her father to look at when they come to visit.
I just did a quick search, I know there used to be one at North Hills that dh liked to visit. Since the demise of the North Hills mall, I had forgotten about it. It was called Hungates, and I just googled Hobby Shops Raleigh and came up with Hungates at Cary Towne Center and Triangle Town Center malls. Here is a link to their site, and you can check and see if they might have anything that would interest your 12yo. http://www.hungates.com
Toy town.... http://www.toytownhobbyshop.com/ out in Fuquay rocks for all sorts of things to do with your hands. Thats about the age I got into RC cars, and it has served me well. He'll learn basic electronics, mechanics, how to drive, etc using them. Plus they are a buncha fun. I prefer the kit ones like Tamiya, but you can get pre built ones, and he can just fix them when they break. You cant get more basic (and reliable) as a Tamiya Grasshopper. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fo18DgYMpiY
If you do go the RC car route, make sure to pick him up a good set of tools. Using junky ones will strip out the tiny screws and such that the cars are built of. They might have something there, but I got mine from radio shack (I think technically they are called jeweler's screwdrivers-they were less than $10). Talk to Anna @ toytown on what you are looking for, etc. She wont steer you wrong.
