Okay, kids go on field trips as we all know. Great experiences some of them are. Now, the price of gas has dropped dramatically the last couple of weeks as we all know. Again, good news. Should not cost as much to run the buses. Alright. I have 2 children going on the EXACT same field trip to the same place. They are only going to WJHS to see a performance. CMS is charging $2.00 per child and Westview is charging nothing per child. SOOO, why the difference? I'm not fretting over the $2.00 so please no blasting. I"m just honestly curious as to why one JCPS charges and the other one is not. Plus, it is literally just around the corner. Don't know exact mileage but guarantee you it wouldn't be $2.00 per person to get there. I wrote a note on the permission slip to ask but figured you all would probably know more than the teacher. Sure the teachers are given the standard answer of "it's transportation costs" from the administration. Again, gave her the $2.00 for the trip just wnated to know how this is determined. Thanks for answering a no nonsense curiosity question tonight. These are all special education classes going. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

I am not sure if this is the case here, but sometimes the PTA has a 'fund' to pay for transportation costs.... so maybe Westview PTA is picking up the tab?

CES has canceled their field trips. I feel bad for the kids, they were real excited about it.

I heard the State is making school districts return money due the budget mess. I can't believe of all places to cut or ask for money back they would choose education money. :banghead:

What? Mine are going next week on a field trip and they go to CES, are you sure or are just some being cancelled?

WVES PTA does put in their budget to pay for a trip for the 5th grade class every year. If it's not a 5th grade thing then I'm not sure....

I was told field trips that have already been paid for will be going, but the ones scheduled for Jan. 09 and March are not. The note I received said they (the County?) was going to re-assess or decide in February if any trips can be taken. (Some classes go on two a year, so my DS's teacher was hoping maybe the 2nd one might be reinstated).

thanks for the replies. Wow, I had no idea PTA paid for some of the field trips. Thanks for that info. One of them is in 2nd grade and the other is in 6th grade. Going to the same performance. I had heard the schools were doing just 2 field trips per year. Didn't know they were thinking of doing away w/ them due to the economy. Doesn't quite make sense as it's the parents who pay for the trip anyhow. I just know when my 1st child went to school the pumpkin patch field trip total was $5. Now, it's $11.75. Times have changed, haven't they??? Just wait till next year when inflation really starts kicking in. Yikes! I can understand why the state needs to cut costs just ashame they want to take it from education. Really, the art teacher is only alotted .33 per student. How in the world do you cut that!?!? --just giving as an example. Thanks for the info. Learned something knew tonight.

Thank God we have an education lottery.

That is what some schools do. The bus driver has to be paid as well.

From what I understand, if all of the paperwork has been turned in for the field trip and it has been approved, then it's still on. No others will be approved. Budget cuts.

I heard the same thing - as for the education lottery comment that someone mentioned, I'm pretty sure that is going to pay for the debt incurred for the new schools being built.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the lottery money goes toward the building of new schools and things like that. There's only so much money to go around. Money doesn't grow on trees ya know! :jester:
