Did anyone else drive on Raleigh Road over the 'bridge' tonight? I was travelling toward the high school, and saw a ton of police lights on. When I slowed down, they asked for my license. I was able to produce it with no problem. However, they did seem to have many cars parked on either side of the road.

I wonder what they were looking for...licensed drivers? I wish they had been a few miles down by the highschool. Kids were tearing out of the parking lot!

(In case you're wondering about my avatar, it's the 70' Christmas tree my DH put up in our yard this year on his radio tower...yep, really!)

This time of year they do the checks for licenses and DWI busts. Lots of times they get people who are late with their registrations too. Occasionally, you read in the paper about them finding a few people who had outstanding warrants - guess it gives them a lot of bang for their buck!

Yep - we went through it too. We were on our way home from the HS, we were judging Senior projects - some were very interesting. :)

    Hey,
They do this about once a month & there are usually TONS of cars LEFT along the side of the road for Various reasons.

There was a HUGE Booze it & loose it roadblock on 70 at Guy Rd Saturday night. We were coming from raleigh about 11 Pm and took us 10-15 minutes to squeak through.... Mondays paper said they made only 2 DUI arrests.. :?

2 is 2 less people that could have killed someone. I'll take it. :hurray:

Oh? You like the fact that the police arbitrarily stop people who are otherwise just minding their own business?

Somehow I am reminded of old cold war movies and "Halt, let me see your papers!"

So you don't like the fact that two people were taken off the road who were drunk and could have killed someone? That's all I'm saying Clif. Apparently that means nothing to you and you just want to start an argument. If it saves lives I think you can manage the 10 min. wait, but by all means throw a fit about it.

How would you feel if the cops went door to door just busting in to see if there are any illegal activities going on? I'm sure they would find one or two, the rest, I'm sure, wouldn't mind the inconvenience as long as a couple of criminals were taken off the streets.

And apparently the Bill of Rights means nothing to you.

So my voicing my opinion is starting an argument? Why is it you didn't start an argument by voicing the opinion that the cops should have free reign to "inconvenience" law abiding citizens in exchange for arresting two drunk drivers?

How about if you do yourself a favour and put me on ignore so you don't have to view my arguments any more?

Seriously, so what you are saying is that you have more of a problem with people being stopped than taking drunk drivers off the road? I have zero tolearance for drinking and driving and I bet you wouldn't mind the "inconvenience" if someone you knew was injured or killed by a drunk driver.

And why don't you tell the cops your concern the next time you are stopped? Why don't you file a lawsuit for a violation of your rights? No, you'd rather just come on this board and cry about it. Do something about it Clif if you don't think it should be going on. Otherwise, just take your license out and shut up about it.

Cliff I think your niceness may be wearing off.

How would you feel if your mother, daughter, brother, or other family member was killed by no fault of their own by a drunk driver? I doubt that you would mind being inconvenienced for that 10 or 15 minutes that it takes them to check your license after that.

I can't imagine why anyone would mind these stops unless they were one of the offenders and didn't want to get caught.

I have a problem with cops arbitrarily stopping law abiding citizens in the hopes that they might snatch a drunk driver, yes. The fact that a criminal may be captured does not make it acceptable any more that you would be willing to have the cops go from door to door searching every house in the neighbourhood in the hopes of finding a meth lab (or other criminal activity).

I also have zero tolerance, but that does not mean that I will allow the police to violate the Bill of Rights.

As far as my personal reasong ing, I had a friend die in a car accident. He was drunk at the wheel and, had there been a check point. he may be here today. Be that as it may, though, it still does not justify the government taking away our rights.

So you have no problem with the cops barging in to your home with no warrant or probable cause except that there may be a meth lab somewhere in the neighbourhood?

I do. What on Earth makes you think I don't?

    Lack of funds.

Just be a good slave and let the government protect the rights they are taking away, right?

Clif, if you think it is taking away your rights why don't you do something about it or at least try? I mean you think your rights are being taken away so for yourself and on behalf of the rest of the law abiding citizens why don't you try to put a stop to it? I mean you won't do it, but why not try? Why not be the guy that stands up to the government and their horrible DWI stops?

They couldn't barge in without a warrant and no, I would not have a problem with them searching my house because I don't do drugs therefore I have nothing to hide. If they thought there was one in the neighborhood I would be all for them going door to door to find it.

For one there were other violations cited in those stops that could save us all and to compare house to house visits is just bull crap its a difference of being on private propert and public ROW, I'm all for these stops if your legal there is no issues other than a little time. Big deal.

How many times are you going to ask this?

You seem to think I am the only person who finds the police check points to be a violation of the Fourth Amendment.
