I found an adorable all black puppy on Cornwallis Road today in front of Austin Pond subdivision. (42/Cornwallis area). No collar, seems well-fed and cared for. She's very sweet, but we already have a dog and need to find a home for her. If anyone lost her, please let me know. I've checked with neighbors, but so far no luck. :-(

    Unfortunately, no

She's definitely not 35 lbs. She weighs maybe 4-5 lbs. All black except for a small white spot on her chin and chest. I might try to upload a picture tomorrow (haven't done that before)- we're planning on posting pictures and contacting vet offices.

    Thanks anyway. :-(

    Search ideas?

I've posted here, knocked on doors, placed a flier on some mailboxes on surrounding neighborhoods, and placed an ad on craigslist. I plan to take her to a vet tomorrow just so they can tell me what they think she is, black lab? And ask to post a note at their office. I've also posted an ad on petfinder.com. Any ideas on what else I can do?

Is it true if I take her to the JoCo shelter she'll have only 3 days until they'll put her down? Is Wake County rules the same?

I'd appreciate any help and suggestions.

Send an email to webmaster@jcapl.org with the puppy's picture and an explanation of how you got her. You can also call [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]JCAPL at 919-989-7601 (but that is a VM number - you can only leave a message). JoCo shelter can legally put down strays after 5 (maybe 7) business days. But they try to keep the adoptable dogs and cats as long as possible. I would expect that a little puppy would be adopted or rescued quickly.

I'm not sure on that stuff. I hate that you would have to do that. Maybe someone here can foster till a new home is found. How long are you willing to hold on to her? I might know someone at work that lost their black lab and they may want another one. I could ask.

The pup looks like a "lab mix" which is what about 20% or more dogs are catagorized with when a breed is gue4ssed. You can have the vet check for a microchip - but with the age of the pet/size, I doubt it came from a shelter that chipped it and if the owner did. you would probably see the ID tag on a collar that the pup would have been wearing - sure they can slip a collar. . .but you never know.

IF you were only going to see a vet to determine breed - save yourself a trip. For some reason people think that vets KNOW dog breeds - on the contrary, they know dog/cat/rodent/bovine/equine health and unless it's a breed that they deal with on regular basis or own themselves, their guess is usually as good as yours or your next door neighbor. Even at SPCA WAKE, with experienced vets, kennel workers and counselors we GUESSED breed mixes 50% of the time because the computer program insisted we put something in. Most software programs shelters use is similar. Eyeballing a pup doesn't always give you a good idea of what they are - they can change a lot as they grow up - especially some long haired breeds - you would never know the dog in front of you at 3 years old was the pup in the picture you took when you brought him home (speaking from personal experience)

On an interesting side note - there is a way to find out what a mixed breed may have in its ancestry http://www.dog-dna.com not suggesting you do this - I meant it for anyone reading this who can't help but wonder what Fido is. . .

You might try placing fliers with the pic at nearby convenience stores - lots of people see them. Definitely contact JCAPL and call the shelter and give a description of the pup to see if anyone has called there reporting it missing.

Sad that this little pup is without it's owner and with this bone chilling weather someone isn't knocking on your door asking if you've seen their puppy

Thanks everyone for all the advice.

Zoo, thanks for the info about taking her to the vet. I'm guessing she's a lab mix too (after googling dogs online). I noticed the paws on the lab pups seem so much bigger than hers. Since I have a picture of her, I was also going to post a notice at the vets. I called a couple Vets this a.m. and no one has contacted them yet looking for her. One vet offered to scan her for a chip, but doubted she had one being so young.

Luckily, another 4042er has offered to take her today and help her find a home.

Sheri, please do let me know if your co-worker is interested. I’m going to do my best to continue to help find her a home, but unfortunately I cannot keep fostering her at our house.

This is really breaking my heart because my kids are so in love with her, (me too), but we truly can't keep her.

I sent a message to the address you provided, but it comes back undeliverable. I've also called the VM number.

    thanks.

I contacted the webmaster and she said that emails were coming into webmaster@jcapl.org at that very minute. I tested it myself too, and did not get a bounce back. Please try again.

She called me and said mine went through. Not sure why I received an undeliverable message. She was very kind, thank you.

Although the pup is still homeless, she is in great hands and I'm very hopeful she'll find a new home soon.

    Thank you 4042 friends!

I asked her this morning and she said she would rather find the one that she is missing. I would love to take her in myself. But, I'm so afraid I would get attached, plus I don't have the extra money for puppy food and vet.

Right now she's being fostered, building her immunity to her shots and will be up for adoption through Wake County SPCA. I'll post her info when she's uploaded to the site, I sure hope she's adopted quickly. She really is a sweet pup, such personality already!

I just don't get how people can abandon animals like they do (if indeed this was the case with her). It all makes no sense.:x

Yeah, that is how I got the black dog in my avatar. She was a little black puffball and only 5 weeks old, literally sitting in the road at night. I bet quite a few others on here either have acquired or rescued dogs that way. I will never understand it.

When we lived in Raleigh, every year right around Christmas, my neighbors acquired a new pet - it alternated between canines and felines. The felines all disappeared - likely went and found themselves new homes, they never kept their cats indoors even when tiny and it was freezing  Ticked me off to no end! With their pups, I'd see them with the puppy outside and it following them around, never once leashed one. . .but by Spring, the pup was gone - either took off or they dumped them somewhere. I'd inquire in a non-threatening way, but guess they knew better than to own up to anything. Once they caught me asking their 4 year old, who was playing in my driveway when I got home from work, about where their new puppy was as I walked her back to her house. . .the dad walks outside just as we were going up their walkway. . .and pitched a fit telling me he doesn't like his kids talking to strangers. . .duh, can you say lack of supervision??? I didn't consider myself a "stranger" I lived next door to them since before their kid was born. Anything could have happened to that little girl alone outside at 5:30 in the afternoon when everyone is getting home from work - cars all over the road.

This same couple split up before we moved and the wife kept the place - one night about 3am I woke up to Quincy and Percy barking and saw lights from police cars - The oldest (almost 6 years old then) woke up and got scared to find her mom gone and went knocking on the door of the neighbor on the other side of them wearing only a little nightgown - It was mid FEB and freezing out! The neighbor didn't know them well either, but went over to the house and looked around and saw no mom and took the little one (about 18 months old) who was still sleeping back to her place and called the cops. They had flashlights and were searching the yards surrounding the house for a while as the moms car was still in the driveway - they thought something bad might have happened - then a car pulls up and the mom, staggering, does the drama scene - thinking that something like a burglary or whatever happened, only to find out that she was in deep ka-ka for going out to party and leaving these two little kids home alone. Not too deep apparently, cause about a month later, she had them both back home. We moved that September so unsure what ever became of them. Moral - people who can't take care of a pet properly, should never be allowed to bear children!
