How does HBO get exclusive rights to a free concert on government property?
None of the news stations were allowed coverage yesterday at the Lincoln Memorial. (I think it was the Lincoln Memorial :? )
I was wondering why.... or how..

Not sure why but I do know that HBO showed it for FREE. Time Warner Cable channel 400 showed it live then again yesterday evening for those who missed the live portion. Could be because they don't have commercials...that's just a guess.

It will be on again! I can burn you a disk if you want. It was awesome. I cried, sang, laughed and really learned a lot about our nation. My air guitar was playing wonderfully.

I think they paid a few mil for the exclusive rights. It was on HBO free yesterday afternoon.

Time Warner Cable has been advertising it on their Channel 14 for more than a week now that they would be airing the event live FREE for everyone on HBO. DirecTV also was announcing that they would air it for FREE to everyone on HBO. It's been discussed on news channels for at least a week.

HBO paid the "Inauguration" for exclusive rights to airing the concert. Also there are other events which will be occuring throughout the Inauguration time frame which the exclusive rights to air them have been sold.

The way it's been explained on FOX is that the money HBO paid to have exclusive rights to air the concert is going towards the cost of all Inaugural events.

This is not much different than public schools allowing corporations to advertise in return for contributions to the school. This is just in the scale of millions of dollars instead of hundreds of dollars. Capitalism is alive and well.

I guess what I'm saying is that I've had full knowledge of the deal for at least a week or so. We chose not to watch it. But you can bet that there's been plenty of excerpts shown on all news programs.

My TV is on maybe a couple of hours a week and when it is it's usually NatGeo or Discovery. Just not that much in to the boob tube I guess.

    Sherry,
Thank for the offer. lol I'm one of those God awful Centrists. [IMG] But anything with music usually grabs my attention.

Because, though the property might be government owned, the performers aren't.

HBO has bought the rights for almost 20 years now including the Bush Presidency.

Seems like a BS way to do things. Public events in public venues should be open to all.

By that logic, since the Internet, technically, is government owned, it should be free to access. And, since Amazon is on the Internet, which (technically) is a public venue, then everything they have should be free.
