Work is on a two-hour delay for me (I work out near the fair grounds). I'm trying to figure out what time I need to leave by (I know, probably should leave now) I was wondering if anyone who has made it to Raleigh could let me know how the drive was. I heard on WRAL that there are a lot of accidents. Thanks.
First thing to do is use your common sense when driving in this crap. While I work and live in Clayton and do not have far to travel, all of my travel is on back untreated roads, and I had no issues at all. However I did see a few idiots out that thought it was just white rain and were speeding right along, and sliding this way and that in the process. Also note that the more the roads get traveled the worse it will be as the snow starts to get packed down and becomes slick. Craig
Agree with Craig. Packed snow becomes slick-arse ice!!! Do us all a favor. Call in sick, take a personal day, whatever, just stay the heck at home. You deserve it!!!!
dh had to go in this morning because of his job, trust me stay home! they are busy as crap this morning... wreck after wreck
Left for Winston Salem at 6:30. Got to Garner at 7 and decided to just go to the office. Normally takes me 15-20 mintues to get to the office. Slow going, but not to bad. May be worse going home tonight.
Thanks for the input - believe me - its not a hard decision for me to stay off the roads - it was just one of those things where I didn't want to find out tomorrow that it really wasn't that bad out where I work and could have made it in. I talked with two of my bosses yesterday to let them know that I probably wouldn't be in - they aren't going in either. I have a feeling it'll be minimal staff today. My philosophy is that if I were to be in an accident, I'd have to pay the $500 deductible, be without a car until who knows how long while it's being repaired so it's just easier for me to take a vacation day and lose the day than to go through the hassle of an accident.
DH went into work (Hubert Street - off of South Saunders) he left at 6:40 instead of his usual 7:20 and made it in just before 8. He said 210 was the worst part of the drive, but that there were a number of vehicles including a 18 wheeler that went off the road along I40. He said something about the 18 wheeler looking like it turned around - we had a bad connection so souldn't get the whole story. He did say what he and 1 other person from his group were there, so about a dozen people ran late because of the weather. Tried to call him to see if he's out on the roads - they often put the chains on and get to working - but those darn vans can really do some sliding around. Got his voice mail - so waiting to hear. I'm a worry wart. We both learned to drive under snow conditions and did for years before relocating, but when you are among drivers who aren't all that experienced and don't heed the "slow down - give yourself lots of room in front of you - don't slam on your brakes - steer into the direction of the skid. . ." it becomes a very dangerous deal. Stay warm, dry and safe - unless you're out playing in this stuff.
DH just called - his crew all have their chains on and are heading out now. By the sounds of it, Raleigh has pretty much the same amount falling as we have.
With as many home today and so many slamming this board by the minute, why is no one in the 4042 chat room?
This native North Carolinian knows snow days are for making soup, hot chocolate, and snow cream, not for driving.
Hubby had to go in this morning. Drove from here to Morrisville with no major problems (just slow). Then they took him to Greensboro to drive another guys tractor trailer home because the other guy was out of hours. I just talked to him and he's around Salisbury and said they didn't get near the snow that we have. I agree with Softballmom . . . I got up and cooked bacon and eggs and made some coffee and I'm just gonna take it easy today. Hope everyone enjoys the Blizzard of '09!
