My SIL microwave stopped working this weekend. It is of course 3 months out of warranty, and GE will charge $79.95 just to come out and look at it. If they can fix it, the $79.95 will be applied to the repair. It is mounted over the stove, so someone would need to come out to look at it. Is there anyone reasonable and honest? We're afraid that GE will charge the $80 and then tell her that they can't fix it or the repair charge will be ridiculous. Thanks!
It will be very difficult to get a professional repair company to come to her house without charging a service charge.
We're not as worried about the service charge as the honesty for the repair cost and the ability to do the repair. We found several forums where people complained that GE either came to the house and looked at the microwave for less than 5 minutes before saying that the microwave couldn't be fixed and charging the $80 (without even taking it apart), or that the repair fee was more than the cost of a new microwave. We just don't understand how they wouldn't stand behind an appliance that is only 15 months old. So we're just looking for a local person who will be honest. She is expecting to have to pay a service charge. Sorry for the confusion!
Do you trust Sears? They work on all brand appliances. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/nb_10153_12605_NB_RequestRepair?adCell=A4 Bobby Ross @ Stewart's Appliances has been servicing Clayton residents for many years. I am not sure if he works on microwaves. I do know he is honest. 553-6205
The name of the place on S. Saunders St. is Micro Ovens. Years and years ago they charged something like $25 just to look at your microwave. Don't know if they make service calls or not. It would probably be cheaper and less headache to buy a new one.
How much did it cost? 15 months seems short to me but I think when I bought mine it was only about $100. I would hate to pay that much to get one fixed when I can get a new one for that price. Good luck. It sucks when something breaks down!
Unfortunately it is an over the range one that cost around $500. So fixing it would be preferable if the fix isn't too outrageous.
Yeah, that's the bad part of the over the stove cabinet mounted ones. I had to replace the door to mine and it was $180.00 :shock::shock: I don't slam it anymore, I can tell you that!
Well, my PSA for the day is to not buy GE microwaves. I have several coworkers that had theirs break very shortly after leaving warranty. And I found out that my other SIL had her over the range GE break while it was still in warranty. They came out and determined that it was a factory defect, so they got her a new microwave...then they told her it would cost $360 if she wanted them to install it!!!! So they had no problem taking the old one away (probably fixed it and sold it as reconditioned or used it for parts), but wouldn't install the new one?! And of course the warranty states that if it is not properly installed, it voids the warranty. :banghead:
Oh no, i need to replace my door, DS's friends opened it at the same time they opened the fridge and the handle is shot!!! How did you go about getting a new door instead of the whole micro?
