UPDATE:Abandoned Dog on Cornwallis, Old Drug St Rd Not sure if anyone else saw this on Craig's list. I haven't noticed a dog there but I am going to try and go by tomorrow with food/water. Then I'll try and contact poster. Anybody know anything about this poor dog? Thanks! FROM CRAIGSLIST: Update: Abandoned Dog on Cornwallis, Old Drug St. Rd -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply to: comm-1031114337@craigslist.org [?] Date: 2009-02-11, 7:11PM EST There are a few people following this story and I said I would update here. I have contacted a number of agencies and some have called me back with great advice. The dog is still there keeping watch over the empty lot--when I went by today there was another concerned individual there checking on the dog. I am trying very hard to locate a rescue group to take her in. Some good souls are feeding her, giving her water...someone put a dog house with a blanket in it. Today she looked better fed and not quite as skittish. A rescue vet emailed me today and said she would try to take a look at the dog and for that I was very appreciative. An animal behaviorist just contacted me a few minutes ago with some great advice--she is going to stop by and see the dog to assess the dogs behavior, which I think is wonderful. She also suggested that, when we call the rescue groups, to mention that we might be willing to put a few dollars in toward the dog's needs. I know I would be willing to do that, even if it's only $10, and if enough people donate it could cover the cost of some of her care. If anyone who has contacted me prior (or reading this now) willing to do so, by all means email me. I am going to send a letter to the people who lived there in the trailer (the number is still on mailbox)--who knows. Maybe they moved with the dog, and she ran away and believes she is "home". Or, they gave her away and same scenerio. Either way, I'm hoping the letter will be forwarded and they can shed some light on this special, and seemingly very loyal, girl. This is becoming quite a story...I will update more when I know more. Please contact me if you know anything or can suggest a group who might assist us in getting this dog to a good, safe place. ABANDONDED DOG AT CORNWALLIS AND OLD DRUG STORE RD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply to: comm-1030216759@craigslist.org [?] Date: 2009-02-11, 9:46AM EST Here's another posting regarding the same dog... FROM CRAIGSLIST: I went there at 8:30 am and she was still there. I saw the post last night. I tried to get her to come to me but she wouldn't. I left and went back with some food and water. When I got back in my truck she walked over very scared and began to eat. She would not drink any water. She went back to the comforter she is laying on and layed down. I got out and walked slowly towards her talking to her real easy and she started to growl and got up and ran towards me. I think she is guarding the property. She does not know that her owners are gone. She acts like she is guarding the yard and waiting for her owners. This is so sad. I wanted to take her but she will not let me. She will not let me get close enough and I was scared I was going to get bitten. I wanted to call animal control but I know that she will probably get put down. I don;t know what to do. Can someone please try to help this girl. Maybe someone with more experience with scared animals? PLEASE!!
Awww, poor baby. Hope someone will be able to get her and take care of her. You that she is really scared and probably does not know what to do.
Another update from Craigslist - Update: Abandoned Cornwallis Dog (Cornwallis/Old Drug St Rd.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply to: comm-1032309989@craigslist.org [?] Date: 2009-02-12, 5:06PM EST Well, I am very heartened over the response we have had for this dog. She still is not out of the woods yet, literally, but we have a great team of concerned citizens assembled who are taking care of her until we find her a way out. I've received responses from 3 rescue personnel/experts who are hoping to help us. One "citizen team member" has emailed me to say "I went out there today as well. I took her food. It was hard to leave her there. I sat on the concrete pad and she came to me there. She is very scared but she relaxes if you let her come to you. She will smell you and then she will put her head on you. If you are careful you can rub her. once started she is a baby begging for more." she also wrote: "She is not agressive unless you push her. If you take her treats and just sit down and let her come to you she will." I agree with this wholeheartedly and this echoes the advice given by the behavioral expert. So, not to push her, and she will respond. Next step is to get her to trust so that we can "socialize" her and eventually get a leash on her and feel comfortable with that. When she is adequately socialized we can then look to get her rescued. I have a letter going to the former people who lived there, and two more rescue contacts who were highly recommended by a professional. I will get in touch with them as soon as possible. More people have emailed me to tell me they are feeding her...perhaps we should have a feeding schedule. If this sounds good I can draw one up, then people wouldn't have to stop by everyday but once or twice a week. Also, we have $60 in pledges toward her care once she is rescued! Super. I want to pass along a caveat that one expert told me: Please use caution and remember that this is an unknown animal. We certainly don't want anyone to get hurt or bitten. Having said that, if she does appear to show more interest that is a positive development and important if she is hoping to go to a new home. Will keep you all updated as this progresses.....lucky dog to have people care for her so much. Sharon
I really want to go get this dog and love it to pieces. Where EXACTLY are we talking about? Go down Cornwalls BEFORE Old Drug Store Rd and it's on the left correct??? What kind of dog is it and WHY is it there? Did someone dump the dog there? The lot has been cleared for some time now???
HG - here's another one of the Sharon's posts on Craigslist - it also has her contact information as I haven't gotten by there yet...I'm going to try today. ABANDONDED DOG CORNWALLIS AND OLD DRUG STORE ROAD (CLAYTON) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply to: comm-1029698992@craigslist.org [?] Date: 2009-02-10, 8:06PM EST There is a very sad skiddish dog that seems to be abandonded on a lot that used to have a trailer on it. She is thin and very scared and shy. Is there a rescue group that would be interested in taking a look at her and try to make her life better. It breaks my heart to see the lost look in her eyes. The lot is located on cornwallis where it meets with old drug store [/I]road. If you can help that would be great. Please reply with any info or ideas
HG, just wanted you to know that I got a pm where the person advised that Animal Control was there as the owner wants her removed. I have asked the person for permission to forward their note to you and also asked for clarification as to what owner...the abandoned dog's or the empty lot.
OK I went by yesterday am and saw her Then on the way back from the grocery store AC was there THEN later on there was a white SUV and a car there and 3 people.
Ok, if I'm thinking about the right place......the man who used to live in that mobile home on the left, if you're coming down Cornwallis toward Old Drug Store Road, right before the stop sign, passed away a while back. Not exactly sure how long ago or what they did with the mobile home.
Good new ya'll. The dog has a foster home! See the latest post below from Craigs list: Update: Abandoned Cornwallis Dog (now Valentine) (Cornwallis/Old Drug Store Rd) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply to: comm-1037198007@craigslist.org [?] Date: 2009-02-16, 2:19PM EST I visited Valentine at the Fosters on Sunday and was so glad to see Valentine, tail wagging, clearly relieved to be off the lot. The Foster is an amazing woman with a loving family who has let Valentine stay with her until a permanent home can be found. A rescue group is working with the Foster to take over the care and placement of Valentine (I will be posting that group once the papers are signed and it becomes official--we are working on that as I write this); however, we are still accepting donations. I will make sure any monies received go to the proper group who is caring for Valentine. Once the rescue group is disclosed you may of course send donations directly to them "for care of Valentine". Below of some pictures of our girl, and you can see how comfortable she is with her foster family. She loves them in a way that defies explanation...whoever adopts her will have a very special dog, indeed! I will update again shortly. Sharon
