Hi all, Can anyone suggest summer care for an older child. By older, I mean 11 ( I know that's not all that old ! ). Here is the problem - my DD is somewhat mature for her age. We have used a couple of summer programs in the past but she has really not enjoyed them too much. For the last couple of years, she has been at Morgan's. She enjoyed it the first year but last year, she just dreaded going and always looked for options - relatives she could stay with etc. I think the thing is that most of the kids were younger - 5 - 8 maybe. There were a few her age that she knew but just didn't really seem to enjoy it. Now that summer is fast approaching, I am in a quandry about what to do. I need a sure, dependable thing as we both work full time ( that is the issue I have with letting her stay with various relatives ). We can't really do week long summer camp things here or there as we need something that allows us to work 40 hours a week. I wish I could find some way she could "volunteer" somewhere. She loves and is really good with kids but I know she is way too young to actually work. she needs something that would make her feel productive and make us feel secure. Not comfortable with leaving her home alone all day - not by a long shot !
Have you considered the YMCA? I plan to look more at their programs when my son is a little older (he is only 7 now). Good luck!
Interskate has a program - the kids are grouped according to age. When my son went they had some pretty cool fieldtrips. Canoeing, horseback riding, etc.
my boys are 12 and enjoyed Upward Bound with the JoCo YMCA last summer, and I will be enrolling them this summer too. You can pick and choose which weeks (they are themed) or sign her up for the whole summer. Details aren't available yet for this summer, but here is the site. http://www.ymcatriangle.org/Johnston_County_YMCA/Programs/Youth/Summer_Day_Camp.aspx
does she like to dance? some studios offer summer dance programs, or try some gymnastic classes at Premeire my daughter loved it there and the kids were nice. i dunno about this area but back where i lived they had summer skating camps my oldest loved it spent a few hrs a day 5 days a week , you could do as much or as little as you want. good luck tweens are hard to find things to do , heck teens arn't much easier.
One of the girls in the neighborhood goes to Kids Camp (?) on 42 and she was telling us that some of the girls her age work there helping out with the younger kids. You said your daughter was good with kids maybe she would be happy there.
My son is currently a fifth grader and he will be a sixth grader this Fall. Which group should I have to sign him up for? Camp Upward Bound for 6-9 graders -OR- Camp Fundamental for 1-5 graders? He went to InterSkate last year and love it, but he want something different and new.
