I was just watching the news and they announced that the ACLU is officially investigating the Johnston County Sheriffs Dept for racial profiling! They mainly noted that routine police checks were done in "questionable areas regarding racial profiling". Seriously I have been stopped several times on Old Drug Store Rd. & Raleigh Rd. Is there something I dont know about??
I think they are just taking the N&O story and running with it personally. I still stand behind our law enforcement (lord knows I cannot stand in front of them).

    Rant over!

I believe that Sheriff Steve Bizzell comes up for re-election in 2010. I want a "Re-Elect Sheriff Steve Bizzell" sign in my yard a whole earlier than summer of 2010.

Perhaps next week would be nice..................

He probably has some left over from the last election, why don't you check with him? :)

I like the sheriff and the work he's done. I'd vote for him again. I don't care for the ACLU.

    Thank you for the link.

I'm a country boy born and raised here with an accent that gets me picked on by the Yankee's.

I get stopped all the time when they have these checks.

The ACLU is making a big deal out of phooey.

Card carrying member of the ACLU on my end. Guess Limbaugh enjoyed using my donations throughout the years on his defense. Racial profiling is wrong and if actual facts are proven then the Sheriff should resign. Until it is proven it is up to those accusing and defending to prove it. Might want to put duct tape on Steve's mouth so taxpayers dollars aren't wasted again.

P.S. I did see a candidate's sign on I40 at exit 306, right at the split. Was driving so I did not see which candidate.

If this is the worst news that you'll have this week, you've got it made in the shade.

Seriously, does anyone think that the ACLU can conduct an investigation that will amount to anything, other than possibly embarrassing results. Even if they did find anything, thier only recourse is to sue in federal court or ask the FBI to investigate. And for the FBI to do that, there would have to be a preponderance of evidence.

That said, I fully support finding out the facts. It's not the questions that cause the problems, it's the answers to those questions.

Note that the ACLU's main focus is on protecting the civil liberties of people. Yes, they've represented some controversial (and MOST unpopular) stances, representing ALL sides of the political spectrum.

If the JCSO has done nothing wrong, they have nothing to fear.

Disclosure....Yes, I am a member of the ACLU.

Sometimes racial profiling is necessary. For example, witnesses report seeing a black man exposing himself to joggers in a local park. Police entering the park stop all black men who appear to be loitering, but do not approach white men. This is racial profiling, but why should they stop white men if the witnesses report that the suspect was black? Should they stop and question white men just for general purpose so that they don't look like they're being racist?

That would be a left over sign from Kay Hagan. She has quite a few signs still out. Apparently she doesn't care much about the beauty of her state, or maybe she thinks the state is more beautiful with her name plastered everywhere.

Yes, I agree that in some instances profiling is necessary.

Turns out that it is a Beth Wood (D) sign. I have already contacted their office.

Not an example of profiling at all. Racial profiling would be stoping one group because their ethnic background is perceived to make them more likely to commit a crime. In your example there has been a crime and it is being investigated. Now if your example went like this it would be profiling:

In a program to prevent possilbe flashing of park patrons the police step up patrols. Police entering the park stop all black men who appear to be loitering, but do not approach white men.

Not a crime in general but a specific crime. That's why they say that stopping only middle easterners on international flights is called racial profiling.
