We took one of our dogs to the vet this morning because he had a large swollen area on his stomach. Turns out it was a snake bite. I had no idea that there were snakes out at this time of year.
Were they able to tell you what kind of snake bite it was? Snakes don't usually wake up until it gets warmer out. But they are out there hibernating, so your dog must have woken one up!
Probably happened upon it on one of the warmer days we had when the old serpent decided to get some sun. Dogs can really get into some trouble, can't they? My German Shepherd once decided to tangle with a muskrat. He killed the thing (might have eaten some of it) but not before the muskrat gave him a nasty bite. We didn't realize he had been bitten and he got a very, very nasty infection from it.
Yes, with the weather being warm recently some snakes are out. When my daughter was younger around this time of the year she was sitting on the ground in some woods throwing rocks. She came running home with blood dripping from her hand and both of us thought surely it was a prickly bush. Put her hand under cold water and could see the teeth marks on her thumb. Seems it was an Eastern Diamond protecting her area that came out, struck was gone. By the time we finally got to the hospital the venom could be seen moving up to her elbow, we could see everything swelling. Luckily the hospital had the anti-venom. One of the teeth actually chipped a part of the bone off in her thumb. We can still see the bite if we look closely. Thoughts are with you, Sherry
