I just read elsewhere that it is possible to make butter with our Kitchenaide Stand mixers and heavy cream using the paddle attachment. My grandmother made butter using one of those Daisy butter churns............seems like the mixer would work. Off the the store for heavy cream! :hurray:

Me too! LOL! I'm going to call my grandmother, because I don't remember whether the cream needs to be cold or room temp and also how much salt to put in. Probably have to get some cheesecloth too, to drain the butter with. It sure would be nice to have fresh butter though.

My mama always warned me not to beat the whipping cream too long "or you'll turn it to butter!"

Well, spoke to my Grandmother tonight and I need to get real cream, not the stuff in the carton at wally world. Kinda figured as much. So tomorrow, hope to have time to go to Kroger and see if they have any from the Homestead Creamery. No cheese cloth, she says you just rinse it under cold water in your hands. Oh, and you should let it set out a bit first so it's not cold out of the fridge, but not room temp either. This is going to be fun, LOL.

    Room temp as I recollect..

back in the day, when we were as poor as church mice, Momma's BF (still don't and will never know why they never married as they were a couple committed to each other, and I thought of him as my Dad) worked at the Mayola Place. He'd brink big containers of cream over to the house on Saturday nights and we'd sit around the LR, watch TV (usually Championship Wrasslin' from Florida and Gordon Solie) and shake them containers until arms got tired, adn then pass the container onto the person seated next to you, whereupon they'd begin the shaking process, just to make butter for the family.

This was back when I had a paper route at age 8, delivering the N&O for 6o customers, picking them up at 5, rolling and rubber banding them (HATED SUNDAY PAPERS), and delivering them by bike before school, brother Bill doing his 80 paper route, 2 sisters who worked after school at a restaurant, and Momma cooking two shifts at the restaurant to make ends meet. Looking back on it, we probably qualified for all kinds of assistance and reduced lunches at school, but Momma said that was for poor people. So, the butter was how we saved money.

Didn't mean to rain on your butter parade. Enjoy!!!

N&O had an article several years back about making butter out of heavy cream by putting the cream in a plastic peanut butter jar and putting it in the dryer on air for a little while.

I tried it and it worked like a charm.

I had the nicest little glob of butter. Added some honey and it was good.

The author put her jar in an oversize oven mitt and pinned it together to keep the jar in. This cushions the banging as the dryer runs.

I just wrapped my jar in a towel and duct taped it.

Sounds like it would work, but I think I will stick with the mixer! Knowing my luck, I'd have cream all over my dryer, LOL.

I've actually been keeping my eyes open for one of those Daisy electric churns...........I'd LOVE to have one but they are way expensive.

What is a bit ironic about this little experiment is that I hated butter as a kid, I wanted margerine! My Grandmother had a decent sized dairy farm, so we always had plenty of fresh milk, cream, butter, etc. Of course, I preferred "store bought" butter. It's one of my fondest memories of her, watching her work the butter once it was churned and put it in the butter molds. I've been collecting those for a couple years now.

Now I'm going to get all sad, because although she is in fine health at 76, I know she won't be around forever. I call her almost daily.

I have a friend that makes her butter all the time with the Wal Mart cream in the blender and it is yummy.

We make butter in preschool for the Thanksgiving Feast. We buy the heavy cream and but it into a container with a lid and shake it. Keep shaking, it gets really creamy and then separates into a solid and a liquid. The liquid is butter milk and the solid is butter. Using the stand mixer would be easier though.
