http://www.nouvelles.umontreal.ca/u...ists-unlock-mystery-of-molecular-machine.html A major mystery about the origins of life has been resolved. According to a study published in the journal Nature, two Université de Montréal scientists have proposed a new theory for how a universal molecular machine, the ribosome, managed to self-assemble as a critical step in the genesis of all life on Earth.
Any chance you'd be willing to explain this to me in "dummy" terms? I read the article and struggle with what it really means.
Sure, I can give it a try. One of the basic building blocks of genetics, the ribosome, is very complex in structure. This researcher discovered the structure follows some of the basics designs of chemistry. It is stable because of that natural chemical structure. Since is is one of the larger molecules it is important to understand how it can be so stable and not collapse or break apart. It means the natural inclination of any similar type of molecule being formed would be to this structure. Just like crystal structures naturally form geometric designs, such as cubes. This also helps explain how such molecules could form prior to life existing on the planet.
Thanks, Wayne. So, basically this discovery means the scientists believe the structure of the ribosome not breaking down creates a stronger argument for evolution?
