Where to get rid of old paint

I have like 12 cans of paint at my house that i do not need and i have no idea where to take them too. I know my trash co will not pick them up and the dump wont take paint cans. Any ideas?

 

maybe call Lowes and ask them? or just go dump them in their dumpsters....:lol:

 

There is often a drop off day for such things as they are classified as hazardous or special disposal items which cannot be placed in a landfill.

In addition, waste water treatment plants may not allow certain liquids to be poured down the drain. If you have any questions, call your landfill, local waste water treatment company, local waste management office or the Extension Home Economics Agent at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service in your county.

My crazy big sis took all her old paint and mixed it together. Turned out a sort of taupe color. She used it to paint a room in the basement. Didn't look too bad actually!

 

I want to think I've read somewhere that you can simply throw it in the garbage if the paint is dried up. Let it dry out or mix in some kitty litter.

 

My mom has done that before and it turned out pretty good. I have like 3 or 4 that are full almost and i have painted everything in my house LOL so i dont need it anymore. If I had just a little bit i would pour it out and let it dry but i still have SOOOOO MUCH !!!!!

 

I was going to say "The glue factory" but I see you were talking about something else!

 

The guy at the station on Barber Mill told us that same thing when we asked how we should dispose of our old paint cans.

 

Tell me what they say. We literally have about 40 cans of paint or so to throw out. Collected over the years--LOL. And, previous owners left some here. Please let me know what they say when you get a chance.

Let the paint harden in the cans (with kitty litter or paint hardener) and then I was told you can throw them in the trash only after the paint is totally hardened.

 

A few weeks ago, I called the number listed for the landfill and that is what they told me about the kitty litter.

 

A few years ago, I had a lot of one color left from painting my living room-dining room. At that time, I took it to the battered women's shelter. They are always looking for almost anything. When the people are ready to leave it might just be what they are looking for or it may allow them to paint a room or two at the shelter.

 

Heck, if it's any good, put it on Craig's List. People will take anything for free!

 

Donate it to Habitat for Humanity, Art department at a High school, Children's Home in case they may want to remodel.

 

Very good ideas to donate it.

 

DO NOT throw paint or other hazardous materials in a dumpster! There's a special area at the local dump for things like tires, computers, batteries and paint.
