Good Morning, This is my first time ever posting but I do read the posts daily and love em!! I need some advice/opinions/facts, whatever you wanna call it! We have a 12week old male puppy. The vet is advising us to have him neutered. I am all for it but the my husband is NOT! Everything I have read says to do it, do it, do it for health reasons. Being he is the first "house dog" I have had, I don't know what to do! Anyone with and advice or experience(good or bad) please throw it my way. Thanks alot!
PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE Neutering (or spaying) is the route to go .. many reasons .. # 1 reason is already have a major crisis of pet over population. Not only does it cause animals to suffer thru being strays or in shelters, but its costs Tax Payers to euthanize innocence of dogs thru irresponsibilty of people. Although I can imagine your hubby is "feeling the pain", neutering is very harmless to your lil guy --- he'll be bouncing around & acting himself by end of day. There's too many reasons to name as far as health ... less "marking" (which is wetting ur furniture once he starts to cock leg), less trying to get out for those females in heat he'll smell MILES away, and the list goes on & on. But really --- as stated originally, ENOUGH HOMELESS EXISTS without having any accident happen that could involve your little guy. Plus, a male can be a very cute/handsome dog until he turns to walk off & the Danglys are bigger then he is and GROSS! And I'm sure if you took him for procedure, hubby wouldn't even notice. ITS HIP TO BE SNIPPED! :hurray:
Thanks Thank everybody for your input. I have tried telling my sweetie that neutering is the best for our baby's health! He has heard all this BS that he won't be the same dog and he will become lazy and all that! I tried telling him that those things weren't true. But we know how husbands are as far as listening . Thanks alot. I know he will be a much happier healthy dog in the long run!
def get him neutered. he can become very aggressive if he isnt and you won't be able to do a thing to fix that (can't control instincts!) everyone else pretty much said all the other reasons. honestly, i can find no good side to not get him neutered. def worth the money!
Your dog will NOT get fat & lazy because you get him neutered, that is just a myth! Both of my boys are neutered and they are neither fat nor lazy, you should see them chase & harass the squirrels in our back yard! They get fat & lazy because of overfeeding and lack of exercise just like people do, but not because of neutering. Your dog will be a much happier & healthier member of the family if he does not have all that testosterone driving him crazy wanting to get out and find a girlfriend!
Buy some http://www.neuticles.com/ hubby will never know. The SPCA of wake has a low cost clinic. It would be $40 for your dog.... there is a several week wait, so call now! To make an appointment for a pet, submit on online information form or call 919-772-0211. Congrats on your pup!
He will not be lazy. I have females and one male and they are all fixed. My male was just as spunky after as he was before. He is getting old now and sometimes does not move as quickly as he use to at times, but when he gets wound up, he acts like a puppy. Of course our new puppy (she is 6 months now and just got fixed not too long ago) keeps him on his toes. Getting Starr fixed does seem to have calmed her, but only a tiny bit. LOL
Who is telling your husband all this stuff about making it fat, lazy etc? That's an attitude practically from the dark ages. I hope he's planning on making sure to keep the dog under control 100% of the time or else he will be adding to the unwanted pet population if he runs across a female dog whose owner was irresponsible as well. No offense intended, but there is no good reason not to get a dog neutered.
Good grief! The only thing that makes a dog fat and lazy are owners who overfeed and don't exercise them enough. Has your husband not seen overweight and lazy humans during his lifetime? Betcha the majority of them aren't neutered:lol: Here's the deal - lots of people have posted wonderful info and whether your husband is man enough to admit that he might not be correct, consider this: Dogs, in general have a nose approximately a hundred thousand to a million times more sensitive than a human's. This means that they can pick up the scent of a female dog in heat literally miles away. A dog that is not neutered, BY NATURE, will do whatever they can to find their way to that female. They will climb over, or dig out of fenced yards. They will dash out doors. It doesn't matter how well you've trained them, nature is nature. IF your dog gets out on his own he might" A)get picked up by animal control and if you find him, you will have to pay a fine. B)be found by someone who will keep him and you won't have a dog anymore C)be struck and injured by a vehicle - and you will have a vet bill - plus an injured pooch D)be struck by an automobile and killed, and you won't have a dog anymore E)be shot, by some idiot who didn't bother to spay their female, and is ticked off to find your dog trying to have his way with their dog. . .and you won't have a dog anymore F)find his way to the female he was searching for, only to find another, or perhaps several other dogs interested in the same thing - and then very likely a dog fight ensues and either you have an injured dog, a dead dog, or a human happens to be in the way and is injured and you find yourself with a huge lawsuit on your hands. It could either cost you money, or cost you your dogs' life The world has too many unwanted pets. Neutering saves the dog from many diseases, makes them calmer, but my no means docile, they aren't as aggressive, though walk into the home of any neutered male or spayed female dog that has protective instincts by way of breed and they'll protect and defend just like any dog intact (tell the husband to come knock on my door - I have a couple neutered males that would put the fear of God in him - and none are fat or lazy) Neutering will eliminate a great deal of marking while you are on walks, and within your house, as a dominant unneutered male will often "mark" with his urine household items, and even people, if he feels someone or another dog is infringing on "his territory" The humping is not only embarrassing, but can be dangerous if it's for example, an 80 pound dog on a 35 pound child! And my #1 favorite reason: (((((drum roll))))))) Neuter IS Cuter! Sorry guys, but there is noting especially attractive about testicles, whether they are on a human, or on an animal. Lots of women won't be honest about it for fear of damaging frail egos, but honestly speaking, the sight of dangling testicles - isn't hot in any way.
I love me some Zookeeper! LOL! The dog that lives next door to me is an intact male. The older he gets, the lower they sag. NASTY! :ack: (He's kept under control, but Lord knows they bred him to the female several times before they got her fixed. Found them all homes, as they were American Bull Dogs and $$, but that's another tale for another day)
Preach it girl, preach it!! Tell you something else male unneutered dogs do (webbie look away so you dont ban me for saying this) They hump on everything in sight- legs, stuffed animals, etc....and they sit around and lick at their "stuff" all the time. Then guess what, they want to come and give you a big ole wet kiss after they have been licking and "pleasuring" themselves. YUCK!!!!
Neighbors up in Dover, Ohio had a Basset Hound with low hangers. The poor animal absolutely hated snow. :x
Oh, heavens...........the mental image is about to make me die laughing!! This poor old thing next door, he used to be quite intimidating in his younger days, now he's just a teddy bear.
