ON 3/10/09 AT ABOUT 5PM IN FRONT OF LOWES FOOD AT 42/50 SOME JERK DUMPED A DOG OUT OF A CAR INFRONT OF THE STORE SOME LADIES WERE TRYING TO SAVE THE DOG FROM GETTING INJURED IN THE PARKING LOT. MY WIFE SAW THIS AN GOT OUT HER CAR AND HELPED BUT SHE GOT BIT BY THE DOG AND THE DOG RAN OFF, NOT KNOWING THE HISTORY OF THE HEALTH OF THE DOG. JOHNSTON COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL WAS CALLED SHE WAS ADVISED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL AND BE TREATED FOR RABIES EXPOSURE.HEY IT WAS WORTH HELPING THE DOG WHO WAS ABANDONED BY THIS COWARD. UNTIL I GOT THE $12465.00 BILL THATS RIGHT $12465.00 SO IF ANYONE KNOWS WHO THIS COWARD IS LET ME KNOW SHE STILL HAS 2 TREATMENTS LEFT I THINK IT WOULD COST LESS TO TREAT THE COWARD IF I THREW HIM OUT OF A CAR. P.S. AFTER WE GOT DONE AT WAKEMED AT 4:30AM WE WENT LOOKING FOR THE DOG.

I'm reading that correctly that it is over $12,000?????!!!!! What is that covering? Did she get rabies from the dog? Do you have insurance? That is crazy and it's awful when someone who was just trying to do the right thing with no thought for themselves ends up in this situation. I'm in total shock.

When even a dog or cat bites a person and its unknown whether or not the animal has had its rabies vaccine, it becomes necessary to have the vaccination or risk death. I believe I've read that only one case is known of of a person living after suffering rabies. I always heard the vaccination was painful for people, but I didn't know they meant in the wallet too.

Of course, that's the dangers you run with messing with unfamiliar animals. It's always best to leave it to animal control. You can have the best intentions, but it sometimes comes back and bites you...this time, literally. Sorry she had to go through all that.

In some areas I have read of the treatement being several thousand dollars per step in the series, especially in the hostpital. It is generally cheaper through a private practice though. The prescription itelf is only a couple of hundred dollars per injections if you want the cheapest route and can do you own injections. Just have a doctor write a prescription for the serum, get it from the pharmacy, and do it yourself.

I doubt if they told you there was a few days grace period before you have to start the injections, did they? I believe it is ten days in which you could have searched for the dog for testing.

What a jerk to just dump the dog. I hate people who do stuff like that. Good for those that tried to help the animal.

I think I remember seeing the animal control truck in the parking lot that day, but not the dog. I just remember how odd it was to see an animal control truck roaming the LF parking lot...

Last week I was driving I-80 between Reno and Sacramento through the mountains and saw that they post $1,000 fines for folks that abandon animals. I would love to see that back home.

Seriously, over $12k to get checked out from a dog bite!!!!. i hate that people do that to dogs, do not get me wrong, have rescued many a pet in my day and your wife is admirable, but over $12k just seems a bit out there.

I don't even know if you can get the rabies vaccines at a place like a primary care physician's office or at an urgent care (you would think you could), but any ER visit means $$$$$. I'm not surprised at all at a $12,000 bill. We all know the routine: hospital socks it to insurance and in turn, insurance socks it to you as you watch your premiums go up. If you have no insurance, you're basically toast credit-wise or you'll be burdened with a large balance for years and years. Even with insurance, deductibles can escalate and who nowadays can afford to pay several thousand dollars off in just a few months?

Honestly, I was sitting here thinking that we wouldn't be able to make it with medical bills like that. And for it to come from her just trying to do the right thing is the worst part. I'm so so sorry they are having to deal with this.

The county health department instructed us to go the the hospital emergency room for the shots as soon as possible. I called around and was told you have ten days from date of exposure to start you rabies treatment. So I called my doctor and asked her to write an order for me to get the shots. She did. I took the order in the next day to the hospital and was filling out the forms. Being a self emplyed REALTOR I have only catistrophic health insurance where I pay $5000 deductable per year per person. (there were three of us) I asked what the cost of the shots would be and they said $7000! I was shocked! $7000 for the three of us to get vaccinated?" I said. They said "no that's just for you" I said "$7000 for just me to get vaccinated?" They said "No that's just today". I was stunned. I asked "How much for the three of us for all the shots?" They said it would be around $32,000! for my family!!!! I couldn't afford it. I did not think my risk of exposure was great enough to warrant that kind of cost. I was left with a terrible decision. They then asked about my insurance and then said "Oh our contract price for this is different let us check". When they came back they said the costt for all three of you for all the shots would ONLY be $7500. Yes $7500 vs $32,000!! How can that be possible? But still it was too expensive. I called a neighboring county health department (in Phoenix) and they said they could give the rabies shots for $198 per person per shot! Total cost for the three of us is around $3000! Well now I can believe that kind of price. It's criminal what the hospital wanted to charge. I found out later that we could have ordered the vaccine from the drug store and given it to ourselves for about $235 per person per shot.
