hey guys, need some advice. After our lovely little water leak in our dining room, we now have to replace the carpet in both the dining room and living room as it is pretty much one big room. We are playing with the idea of going with laminate instead of carpet as i had eventually wanted to replace the carpet with it anyway. Questions though, cost wise is laminate that much more expensive, is the install easy enough for beginners to do, is there much difference in the Pergo brand and the other brands, where would be the best place to buy it and any other info you can give would be great. TIA

We got ours at lumber liquidators & were pleased. However, after a few years, it has not held up as I'd hope. However, our bamboo flooring downstairs has pared even worse! I know we have a lot of traffic but I honestly thought it would last longer. The floors are all scratched up. The bamboo more so than the laminate. The laminate however, chips easier. Not a big deal to most people but we have a child w/ a prosthetic leg & he gouges the mess out of that stupid flooring. Even moving furniture has chipped the laminate up. The bamboo is only a year old but looks like it's been 10 years since we've had it. We are going to have to refinish most likely before we even put the house on the market in the next few weeks. We purchased due to severe asthma & allergies issues in this house. Yep, still have all those issues so really think that was a bunch of bologna from the docs & the flooring people--LOL. It does cost more but I personally don't think it was worth it. Had to do over, we would have gone w/ upgraded carpeting instead. Again, this may be b/c our traffic amount in the house. But truly think hardwood and/ or laminate flooring should last longer than a year or two. It's still functional, just definitely not as pretty. Laminate does not scratch like my hardwoods but does chip. Very easy to install yourself as we did. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Might be that ours is an odd case. Love to hear others experiences as well w/ their flooring.

I don't know Kaci, I think I would go with either nice carpet or bite the bullet and go with hardwood. I've been less than impressed with some laminate I've seen in houses. In a larger area, it tends to look a lot more "fake" than if you just use it in a small accent area or hallway.

I think carpet is cheaper. Harwood floors can be refinished. Not sure about the pre-finished.

the real wood i know is a lot more expensive and we are trying to stay within what the insurance company gave us (extra money right now just ain't in the picture) but that is why i was asking, i know i have seen some too that didn't look real but some i have seen you could not tell the difference and i definitely want to go with something that will last and look good.

I know what you are saying, that is for sure.........8)I love my Berber carpet, it's been down for 8 years and although it could use a professional cleaning, I have no complaints about how it is wearing.

Check w/DH, we installed laminate at our last house, right before little J was born, and it looked good, and held up w/all our kids and critters. Don't know which one he used though, lol

We have Laminate in our kitchen, and we went with the higher end Laminate. If I had it to do over again I would have went with the hardwood. If your not careful you can scratch easy. We had ours replaced already, butthat because Lowes paid for it when they damange several places on it when they setup our new fridge.

we have laminate in the bonus/bar room of the house at the beach, and we love it....

we have berber throughout the house here in town, love that too.

We got an unbelievable deal on the new carpet here at a place on New Bern Ave. called Tower Carpet and Rug Outlet ....they had what they called a remnant, that covered our den, formal dining, stairs and landing at the top of the stairs for a price you wouldn't believe.....including top-of -line -padding and install.....

Husband installs carpet, and has taken up a lot of Laminate to put down carpet or vinyl. I tried it myself in our kitchen, replaced it with Vinyl after a year. Perhaps it just dosen't do well in a high traffic area, mine chipped too.
