I understand the mother's frustration, I truly do, but if they haven't found her by now, they probably aren't going to with the massive rains we had over the weekend. I hate it, but what more does she expect them to do?

I haven't followed this story fully and didn't read the entire article, but are they suggesting fowl play? Or is it simply deemed an accident that the girl fell?

    An accident.

She was with her friend playing along the riverbank and fell in. The authorities said they have interviewed the friend more than once and fully believe that is what happened. The mother is now questioning whether there was foul play.

My question is................zipping up my flame suit......................who let'stheir 6 year old play along side the river unattended by an adult?

I'm sure that this parent can not psychologically or emotionally accept that their lack of supervision was the material reason that this could have occurred, nor will they probably ever accept it. Since she is unable to 'process" this, her reasoning must then be that it's someone else's fault.

It ain't right, and it ain't accurate, but that's probably her thought process such as it is.

Sorry for her loss, and that of the child. I think the LEOs SAR teams, Divers and everyone else involved have gone far beyond what could be expected of them, especially given the weather factors.

In my mind, this quickly went from a rescue to a recovery mission.

I do wish the outcome was different. That's not always possible, though.

OMG!!!! people what if this were YOUR six year old child. I understand not having the divers going in because of the rain, but they could be checking the banks along side of the river. I know it has been a lot of work and hours trying to recover this little girl but I can see the mother thinking that not enough has been done and I think if it were any of you then you would feel the same. And it was not the mother of the 6 year old that let her play by the bank, She was at a friends house, how many parents let their kids go outside to play and say " don't go here and don't go there" ? No blame should be cast at least not now. We should focus on the recovery and possibly the burial of an innocent child and pray for the families who have to suffer through this nightmare

The authorities HAVE been searching as much as possible! I already said I completely understand her frustration. HOWEVER, I would never, ever let any children outside to play near a swollen river. My kids, someone else's kids, it doesn't matter. If I missed that it was the friend's mother, please forgive. Still doesn't change the fact that there isn't much anyone else can do. It's in God's hands at this point. And I pray the do find her for the mother's sake.

    Cheer,
I understand your thought process on this.

Please allow me to ask a question? You ever scuba dive? Any idea as to how physically taxing it is, in good weather? After a good dive, most of my partners and I were done for the day. And that was diving maybe two hours in 24.

Not to mention being submerged for hours on end, sucking on a hose for what seems to be an endless period, water so cold that your fingers and toes are numbed, that you have to consciously have to remind yourself to breathe and focus on determining whether or not everything you touch is either an item of interest in the search or something that must be forgotten so you can focus on finding something significant, in water and muck of practically zero visibility?

Add to that a lack of a definite point of entry in the water, no idea of exactly how long a body has been in it, the speed of the current, obstacles in the area, etc.

Simply, the search divers and their teams have done as much as could humanly be asked of them. No doubt, if asked, they would continue. Yet, at some point, this decision carries a greater risk of loss to them, and someone must make an unpopular choice to cease operations.

Believe me, we all sympathize with the loss of a child. None of us are callous to suggest that it was deserved.

I believe the frustration expressed is the repeated stories of children who get harmed because of a lack of supervision by those who are the most responsible for their child - the parents. In this case, and so many others, the parents are negligent because they didn't appropriately supervise their children, or children under their supervision.

As a parent, I believe that there is a standard of care for children, that is too often neglected. More often than not, the harm from this lack of supervision is not noteworthy, in that the minor injuries are promptly forgotten about. When repeated occurrences of this neglect occur, some parents become inured to their responsibilities, and then a real tragedy happens. I find it difficult to commiserate with a parent who doesn't know or else fails to demonstrate the responsibilities of being a parent, and fails at the task of safely raising their children.

sorry 6 year old unsupervised by any adult... nothing good hardly comes outta that and add a river... Don't question our compassion about this... Question the lack of supervision... how do you know that they haven't been up and down the riverbank looking, the police and rescue shouldn't be questioned or taken to task either...

Wake up people... how many more little ones have to die due to supervision before some realize that... Way to many stories these days of things like this or kidnappings...

    Sorry...

    From WRAL:

Authorities searched a 5-mile stretch of the river for four days, using tracking dogs along the banks, sonar to scan under the water and helicopters for an aerial view.
They suspended the search over the weekend after heavy rains caused river levels to rise, making it unsafe for rescue workers. Crews dispatched early Monday and Tuesday to evaluate the river said the depth of the water and the speed of the current would make any search effort treacherous.
The Harnett County Sheriff's Office said authorities plan to continue evaluating the river level daily to determine when it is safe enough to resume the search. Dive and rescue teams from across the state have volunteered to help in the search.

Not real sure exactly what else authorities and volunteers could do! :?

I agree that they have done all the can do, and they are still looking by other means. Now as a parent and that was my child, I would want ever single person possible looking. So I can understand that she is upset and out of her mind right now.

I agree. When seeing the weather report for the next few days I did think of this little girl. Americans are great people. Those who volunteered to search are just wonderful people.

Truthfully, the pessimistic non-mother part of me gave up hope the following morning when they didnt' find her. The 40 degree water temps justified that logic.

The mother in me hoped and prayed that she pulled herself up on the bank somewhere.

I see where the mother is coming from, though. I would probably say the same thing... No amount of searching would be enough unless is produced my daughter.

Like I said in the beginning...they'd be looking for my body and hers.
