    Hello!

My family is getting ready to move into our home in Plantation Pointe in Clayton. I was wondering if anyone on the forum lives in that area and can tell me what the utility companies are? I think it's outside of city limits so I'm not sure where to look....

    Electricity
    Water
    Gas
    Trash
    Cable/Internet
    Phone

    Thanks in Advance!

    Electric - Progress Energy
    Water/Sewer - Johnston County
Gas - there are several companies to choose from (not FERRELL gas) McCracken propane maybe?
Cable/Internet/Phone - Time Warner Cable or Embarq

Welcome to the board and Clayton!

Gas - Whoever owns the tank. Some companies won't allow their tank to be purchased so they more or less force you to buy from them. McCracken is one.

Yeah.. i went round and round with McCracken on that one, I finally got fed up with their "service" (needless top offs in May when they know I only used it for a gas fireplace anyways). I told them to come get their tank... and I put in an electric fireplace that I love!

    Dern, I forgot about them!

Hey OP, they advertise here you can save $5 off AND you get a deal if you pay a year in advance also.

Your water may be a community well, instead of public utilities thru JoCo. I think most of those are handled by a company named Aqua.

I'm going to assume that you are from up North or from Florida since everyone else in Plantation Pointe is from one of those places. Therefore - welcome, enjoy the area for the wonderful weather, plentiful jobs, great people, etc. But please, notice my screen name and pass the word..... Love it here, but accept it as it is.
If you aren't new to the area, well, then I just padded my post count!

You should probably talk to your realtor. Mine took care of setting up the water, since I work and they are open bankers hours. You can set up electric over the internet or phone with Progress Energy (your only choice). She then gave us a list of each garbage service, cable provider, gas provider, and telephone company that services our area. All I had to do was go down the list and compare each service.

We went with Dish Network for our cable. If you go with them, be very careful of who you deal with. We got a great package deal, but then found out that they lied to us about a bunch of stuff. We found out later this is because we ordered through an independent sales company, who will apparently say anything to get you to sign the contract. Luckily Dish Network honored everything they said and, after 5 months, we have finally gotten everything the way we were told it would be. We went with Time Warner for Internet, and opted not to get a home phone.

We also found Advantage Waste to be the best deal. I don't know how it is on your side, but were we are they don't pick up recycling, we have to take it ourselves to the convenience center. If this is an issue for you, you might want to keep that in mind when looking into service.

ETA: What will you be using the gas for? I nearly fell over when I found out the installation fees, especially on a new house where all they had to do was drop off the tank and hook up to the line already run to the outside of the house. We have two gas fireplaces. So we opted to purchase our own tank. It cost us less than $120 for the tank, some concrete for a slab, and all the hook-up stuff. The tank is 100#, and holds about 23 gallons. It cost us about $53 after tax to get it filled, which was very competitive.

Look at this link, ours is similar to the Jupiter 26" model. Ours also has a remote control, and if I just want the feature of the flames on with no heat, that is an option. Then there is a high and low for actual heat coming out of the vent. It runs on a regular outlet, my generator can pull it in the even that the power is out in the winter, and it runs on a couple of chandelier bulbs. I love it, and some people have walked in and thought it was real!
I can honestly say I haven't noticed much difference in my electric bill because of it.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

I will definitely talk to my realtor to see what he says, but since we're moving from a very long distance (no, not Fl or NY... lol) I want to have it done b/f I move. The gas is just for the fireplace.... thanks for the additional info about that... good to know.

You know, I was just signing up on the website for Progress Energy... and my zip code is 27527, but it keeps telling me that my zipcode is 27520.... is this a big deal? I'm assuming that one of these are newer, right? It just won't let me put the correct zip..... weird.

Clayton has 3 ZIP codes, but 27520 was the original one, and I think all mail with that ZIP code still gets to the right address. 27527 is the east side of town, and 27528 is just for P.O. boxes. Progress Energy may just not have updated their data base.

Ah Yes, thank you! I figured that, but wasn't sure.

McCracken actually charged me more per gallon for the gas for the fireplace than my neighbor who uses it to heat his house, and because we didn't fill the tank (100 gal) more than once a year, we had to pay a tank rental fee annually of about $65. Just more reasons I ripped it out and went with the electric one...

if just for the fireplace, you might want to consider buying your own tank, under a $100 and filling it yourself at a local gas station when you need it, saves big bucks, that is what we do. Good luck on your move and welcome
