ok, so I put down new mulch and planted some new bushes, again. My dog won't stay his big arse out of there....he thinks that nice new cedar mulch mommy puts down is for him, so he goes in with his 140lb self and sleeps, mashing the bushes flat. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Anyone know of anything that I can spray, shake, or pour that will keep him out, but not harm the plants?

    Thanks.

There are some herbs you can plant that sorta repel animals. Can't think of what they might be at the moment.

Cayenne pepper. It'll keep out dogs, cats, deer and pretty much any animal that you don't want in your garden. It won't harm the plants and humans can't really smell it as well as animals.

    3. Hazards Identification

    Emergency Overview
    --------------------------
WARNING! HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED. CAUSES IRRITATION TO SKIN, EYES AND RESPIRATORY TRACT. MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC SKIN REACTION. MAY AFFECT LIVER, KIDNEY, BLOOD AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. COMBUSTIBLE.

    Inhalation:
Inhalation of dust or vapors can cause headache, nausea, vomiting, extensive sweating, and disorientation. The predominant reaction is delayed intravascular hemolysis with symptoms of anemia, fever, jaundice, and kidney or liver damage.

    Ingestion:
Toxic. Can cause headache, profuse perspiration, listlessness, dark urine, nausea, vomiting and disorientation. Intravascular hemolysis may also occur with symptoms similar to those noted for inhalation. Severe cases may produce coma with or without convulsions. Death may result from renal failure.

    Skin Contact:
Can irritate the skin and, on prolonged contact, may cause rashes and allergy. "Sensitized" individuals may suffer a severe dermatitis.

    Eye Contact:
Vapors and solid causes irritation, redness and pain. Very high exposures can damage the nerves of the eye.

    Chronic Exposure:
Has led to cataract formation in eyes. May cause skin allergy.

    Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
Persons with pre-existing skin, blood or vascular disorders or impaired respiratory function may be more susceptible to the effects of the substance. Particularly susceptible individuals are found in the general population, most commonly in dark skinned races.

I've always just shaken it out. Rain will wash it away, though, so you'll have to reapply after each rain.

Back when I had a garden, we used a product called Ropel that were granules that you sprinkle around where you don't want them to go.
    We got it at Lowe's.
Worked great to keep my furry babies out of my tomatoes.

I just googled this very idea....and a lot of folks suggest this. Some folks
suggest to use crushed red pepper too, and put in a squirt bottle.....hmmmm, it's definitely worth a shot.....

Don't do the moth balls!! It will kill squirrels and small animals that think they are treats...

the squirrels aren't coming anywhere near where the dog is....do you know that my dog has caught two squirrels this year.....two? I think that's impressive. He hates squirrels almost as much as I do.

We put up temporary fencing around rose bushes and areas that we freshly mulched. Nothing fancy; we use that green plastic coated wire fence that comes in rolls. Our dogs are small, so we use the 2 foot high type. Just take it down when the dog gets used to the rule of not lying there; it worked for us. I have also put lawn ornaments right on the mulch (gnomes - concrete ones are too heavy to be pushed out of the way) so it is inconvenient for the pets to make beds there. This fence we also used on the property, to keep the dogs from wandering across the creek. A LOT of it, but it does the job, and is not too high to keep the deer from running through the woods. The green color is also a plus, because it blends in with the forest. It is a lot cheaper and easier to install than the wooden fence we built on the sides of the cleared out back yard. Just some suggestions...
