Ok, so I have the opportunity to get a free Hot Tub. This tub worked a year ago when the lady drained the water out but, it sat up for a year and she said the motor is probably seized up. She said this happened one time before and her husband just replaced the motor and viola!...back in bubbly bizness! So my questions are: Have you ever had to replace a hot tub motor? Is it hard replace the motor? Is it even worth it to replace the motor? Where is the cheapest place to buy said motor? Where can I find a replacement top/cover if we decide to even mess with this thing?

If we do decide to get the free tub...I'll of course need a crash course on how to keep the thing going with the chemicals etc...only reply if you're up for the challenge to assist an not stop question asker.

    TIA

If the hot tub worked when she last drained it, I don't know why it wouldn't work now?

I think motors are a few hundred bucks, but I am not an expert by any means.

I can tell you as far as maintaining the thing, it's not difficult at all. Fill it up, put in chemicals, test them once a month or so, add more as needed. Done.

Good luck, wish I could find a free hot tub.....

Well for starters it would help to know the maker of the prduct and the availability to get parts needed... Thats good it worked when I shut her down last year and drained it but the motor maybe seized up... sounds as though she knows that. LOL

quick test the motor and see if it works... I would imagine the motor being fairly easy if one has some knowledge of electrical and plumbing...

You ask a lot of questions... :jester::jester::jester:

Sounds like you need to talk to Kaci and Monaco. Kaci is the pool/spa expert on the board and Monaco could probably advise about the motor.

    Just an FYI

I had a Softub brand hot tub before moving to JoCo. I had to replace the motor in it-was $700,and I had my SIL replace motor (she's an electrician) so I saved $$ on labor-but she said it was an easy job. If you can find out brand name-its simple to google and find out price/availability of parts.

Need to know the brand and such. But replacement covers are around $200. We have about a 7 to 8 person tub. It's not up and running right nowt hough. Long story. Anyhow, we checked into replacement covers last year at Rec Warehouse in Raleigh and that was the cost. As for the motor replacement, I don't know the cost. But, if it worked before they drained it, it should work again. BTW, very easy maintenance and little water to fill up. Not bad at all. And even if you have to put a couple hundred dollars getting it working again, definitely worth it for sure. Do NOT put it directly on the ground though. Make sure you have an even surface such as a deck(able to handle the weight) or a concrete surface. Sure you know all this already but figure just in case. Free, take it and put the couple hundred into it to get it running. We could never, ever get another hot tub for what they cost nowadays. Good luck. Now, fix it up, kick back and enjoy it!

The maintnenance is a little more difficult than a pool, aminly due to the differeence in water volume and the effect of people using it is more pronounced. Our last one had an ozone generator which helped some with everything but the pH balance. My biggest concern was with the filtration over everything else. The mineral content of the water, the lotions women all seem to use, and the like made cleaning the filters a priority, which if ignored could lead to motor failure due to increased resistence on the pump. That could explain the motor problems prior to now. If you know the manufacturer and model you can get the costs fairly quickly, but if you can get the information off the motor and order it from a place such as McMaster-Carr you can save money. Most motors are not custom designed but are standard "off the shelf" uses. You will need a sturdy base as water is heavy, a GFI breaker, and a disconnect near the tub to meet the code requirements and to be safe.

All in all I would check the filters first before anything else and then see if the motor works. It can be run a short time without water to see if it turns, but not very long to be safe. It will be easier to check if it is not installed completely as they are fairly compact in design. I did the wiring on our last one, but had to have a certified electrician check it and sign off on the installation for the inspector.

While we were at the beach I didn't think to write the name of the motor and such. I'll do that the next time we go. I think it'll be worth it if it's just a couple hundred bucks but if it's 700 bucks...sheesh it can sit there and rot! LMAO Thanks you guys... I guess until I find out the make and model I'm kinda dead in the water.
We've got a concrete deck off of our bedroom we're putting it on... and if it works I can't wait! :hurray:

Another question... is there a way to spray WD-40 and UN-seize a motor?

    <---knows jack squat about motors.

1st there won't be lotiony womenzzz in this tub. Just me and me mini me. But that bit of info is logged away in the useful file. Thanks!

Also, when we built our house, I dreamed of having a Hot Tub in the very spot we're putting it so we went ahead and had the electrician install all the HT requirements, GFI, Disconnect, etc.

Wow... there's a lot of motors on that McMaster-Carr website. I think I might be able to find a motor for just about anything! Jackpot
    Thanks, Wayne:)

Enclose the tub with screen or you will either be dinner or there will be lots of insect repellant lotion with which to deal. Also sunscreen is another of the lotaions that cause problems.
    That makes it nice then.
We do a lot of modifications to equipment and that is a better source than Grainger, even with Grainger being local. Also, Grainger only deals with businesses, which might be another problem for you.

We have a hot tub...IF you can afford it, switching to a salt water system is AMAZING. The water is non-irritating, helps skin if you have skin conditions and is cheaper in the long run. The start up costs are around $1000 per the guy in Raleigh that we went to about it. Also, we've had ours for a few years and the only thing we've had to replace is the jets. We've never had issues with bugs and as long as you replace the filter every 3 months or so, you should be fine. The chemicals is NOT harder than a pool. I was a lifeguard and did chemicals for a pool for a few years and the hot tub is by far way easier. Feel free to PM me with any other questions.

    No, pregnancy causes hemorrhoids!

But...being spayed interferes with the Hot Tub's mystical fertile powers.
