I have a horse pasture, getting ready for a horse. Is there any laws that I have to have to have a shelter put up right away. I plan on doing the shelter in a few more weeks. I see that my neighbors do not have one at all and they have had their horse for years.
You don't HAVE to have a shelter. They just have to have a place to stay out of the sun. Like a shade tree. It's great to have one, cause who wants to stand under a tree in a storm......... but there is no law for a required shelter. Check out this horse board............. http://www.nchorsenews.com/ They will answer all your questions
The law states you need adequate shelter for the horse. That is certainly open to interpretation, and for good reason. Any shelter you have must protect the animal from the elements, so one tree, or even a stand of trees, may not be enough protection from the elements. This isn't to say that there aren't horses out there that don't live quite happily without shelter. (Anyone ever hear of mustangs? Chincoteague ponies?) Most horses, if raised in an environment with scant shelter, are usually happy without shelter, to the point that if you built them one, they wouldn't go in it! I have also seen plenty of run-ins that I wouldn't think of putting a horse in, but they are accepted as shelters per the guidelines set by the county. To say that people "don't care" about horses because they don't have the type of shelter that you or I would provide for them is short sighted and too broad, in my opinion.
I agree chickadee... a majority of pasture horses aren't going to give that shelter one ounce of the effort unless there is food involved. They would just as well be out in it. I had a couple at the time of Fran and those goof balls wouldn't let me pen them up and I wasn't going to argue with them after awhile... they fared quite well. 8)
we have always provided a shelter as a choice.....the horses seemed to use it more in the heat of the summer than winter. I remember my husbands old pony used to stand out in an ice storm and would be frozen to the ground in the morning.....we would have to pour hot water on his hooves to get im loose...LOL
:iagree: A domestic horse is not as prepared to deal with the elements as a wild mustang or Chincoteague pony. If you have domestic animals, it is your responsiblity to provide for all their needs, not just the ones dictated by law. How would some of you like to be confined to a fenced area with no access to a shelter of any kind? Some of them would deal just fine, but some of them suffer.
seriously... who has actual experience with this subject??? Are we hearing from those that really know about them or is it that they read about them with really no experience at all.. Just curious.
Umm..............grandparents had a farm with a couple hundred cows and several horses. I know a thing or two about them, I might be a bit rusty on riding, its been a few years. A good friend I have now has several and her dad raises horses around here. I know you don't stick domesticated animals in a field with no shelter.
What??? You want to fight... :jester::jester: I wasn't pointing at you in particular so don't take offense... I was just asking a question of who is experienced here on the subject. I agree with shelter but I also know most could care less about it unless their food and water is in it. Horses that is... :jester: So we good right now... its Obama's fault anyway.
I believe I was quite clear. Let me be a little more specific. I did not say "no shelter". It is the TYPE of shelter that I am discussing. The law states a horse must have shelter, and then further defines shelter as a tree, a stand of trees, a run-in, etc. There are actually some horses, as I stated previously, that PREFER to live under a NATURAL element, as opposed to a run-in. I also know that. No one is advocating that. We are discussing the interpretation of the law.
Wow. Seriously? Okay. My post was in reference to the debate between natural vs. man made shelters. He stated that he was going to put up a "shelter" in a couple of weeks. He said the horses were in a pasture. He didn't describe the pasture, or state whether or not there was a natural shelter to protect the horse from the elements until he built the man made shelter. You can read into the OP's post what you like, but I prefer not to assume; nowhere in that post did he state there was no natural protection for the horse. The only thing he discussed was building a shelter. This does not preclude the existence of trees. So yes, if there is a stand of trees that protect the horses from the elements until he builds the run in, or shed, or 8 stall barn, or whatever..... then legally he can do that. So no, I cannot say that is EXACTLY what the OP is considering, as you have done... until he states that in a post. As far as the mustangs and the ponies, you obviously missed my point. Some horses are used to living outside. I'm not saying stick all horses outside with no shelter. I'm saying there are some horses that prefer it. If the OP has sufficient natural protection for the horse, and he's not going to take forever to build the shelter, then I don't see a problem with keeping the horse outside (with natural protection for the horse, just keep repeating that) until the shelter is built.
