The gun show is coming to Raleigh May 2-3 I believe. If you already know what you want you should be able to find a deal there. Keep in mind you'll want a gun that sheetrock will stop. You don't want to kill a neighbor after the bullet exits its target and goes through the wall. A short shotgun with #8's fits this bill.

is it really necessary to own a gun? I have never held one in my life and don't like them at all. This is scary stuff. :cry:

 

So do the special rubber buckshot and they are classified as a non-lethal load which shows intent to protect not kill. Of course, you can follow with increasingly lethal rounds to counter any need for escalation in threat.

 

This is a topic that I have a lot of conflict over.... I WANT to be able to protect my family. Hubby travels, etc... I am Ex-Army, and have gun experience. I am going back and forth about getting a gun.

I have kids. If MY gun somehow hurt someone on accident, I could never live with myself. The stories of children killing themselves or other friends with a gun in the home is terrifying to me. If I lock it up, separate ammo from weapon etc... how will I get to it in time in an emergency??

Is the chance of them finding it and getting hurt bigger than the chance of me actually needing the gun???

I am thinking about going to get my permit while I ponder. Do I just have to go to the courthouse for that?

Ideas? Thought?

 

You can get boxes in which to keep your weapons that have combination locks. I have seen one with a "handprint" with buttons which need to be pushed in a certain sequence to open. It is possible to open in the dark and access a ready weapon.

I also have a secondary lock for my Glocks. The magazine disables the firing and release mechanisms unless the three digit combination is entered correctly. The weapon cannot be fired until that point. Of course, a combination lock can be countered with time but that is in turn prevented by proper training.

And yes, ours are safely secured from little hands. We've also discussed with DS what to do if he ever comes across one or sees another child with one.

Mine has a four digit code that I press on the top to open it. I can do it in two seconds and have it out as opposed to turning a dial which would not be easy for me to do under pressure.

In NC you need a permit only to purchase a handgun and/or carry it concealed. Once you have legally purchased one, you can strap it to your side and walk down Main Street, or carry it around in your vehicle, as long as it's not concealed. I've gone through many license checks with mine on the dash and have NEVER had a problem.

Permits are available at your local Sheriff's office.

 

AND Once you get on and want to carry it consealed, you can take a class at a Personal Defense off Tryon Rd. :mrgreen:

 

Check me if I'm wrong here, but it sounds as if I need permission from the local sheriff AND the ATF 4473 application process to legally purchase a handgun in NC.
If I already meet the federal laws and am a good citizen, why is there a need for the local SO to have to approve?
