  1. LITTLE RIVER BAND TO ROCK THE 2009 SMITHFIELD HAM & YAM FESTIVAL

(Smithfield, NC) – 1970's and 1980's hit makers Little River Band will perform their greatest hits such as “Reminiscing,” “Lady,” “Help is on the Way,” and “Cool Change” at the Neuse River Amphitheatre on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 8:30pm as a part of the 2009 Ham & Yam Festival in Downtown Smithfield. The concert is free and open to the public.

The free event, hosted by the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation, will also feature and crafts expo, 3 stages of musical entertainment, food from local restaurants and nonprofit's, and fun activities for the entire family.

“Each year we try to bring in a nationally known and popular act, such as Eddie Money, and last year the Marshall Tucker Band,” states Chris Johnson, Executive Director of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation and Ham & Yam coordinator. "Since we are celebrating the 25th Ham & Yam, we wanted to again make a step up with big-name entertainment. We are thrilled with the talent we've having perform at this year’s festival. You can't get any better than a group like the Little River Band that has over ten top-40 hits!"

The Little River Band was the first Australian band to successfully conquer foreign markets from an Australian base. Within eight months of their birth, LRB had already scored three Australian Top 20 singles and two Top Ten albums. In 1976, after their self-titled debut album was released in the USA, the long grind of 13 US tours in eight years had begun. By 1982 they became the only act to have a top ten US single for six consecutive years.

Total record sales around the world have eclipsed the 25 million mark. All-told, LRB have notched up eight top 10 singles in the US, where just two of their songs, “Reminiscing” and “Lady,” have more than 8 million radio plays between them.

The current lineup is led by Wayne Nelson, who began his LRB career in 1980. The following year Wayne debuted as lead vocalist on the top ten hits “The Night Owls” and “Take It Easy On Me”, and continues in that role today. Wayne has been part of LRB’s scrapbook for over 28 years, and relishes his link to the band’s history. “We all have the utmost respect for the history of the band, and for what Little River Band songs mean to our fans,” he says, “but we always look for a way to bring something new to the stage. We're having a lot of fun exploring new ways to deliver the songs - still recognizable and powerful, but with new twists that will delight those fans who like to listen deep and analyze.”

The 2009 Ham & Yam Festival is made possible with the support of leading sponsors, Chic-fil-a of Smithfield, Sound Station and Security, Four Oaks Bank, Sleep Inn of Smithfield, the Cellular Warehouse, and Carolina Packers Brightleaf Hotdogs.

“As host site of the State BBQ Cooking contest, the familiar staples of the event, and free the Little River Band concert, the festival promises to be one of the largest attended events in Johnston County history,” beams Johnson. “We couldn't have done it this year had it not been for our very generous sponsors.”

The Ham & Yam Festival is organized and supervised by the nonprofit, Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation. For more information about the Ham & Yam, call the Downtown Development office at (919) 934-0887 or visit www.downtownsmithfield.com on the web.
