Hey, I know we are all here in North Carolina but being born in Salem, Massachusetts and personally seeing this building (From the outside of course!!) I wanted to post a link to some pictures of the Oldest Jail in the country which was originally built around late 1600's I believe. This Jail still stands today and is on the National Register of Historic Buildings, but is scheduled to be gutted and turned into apartments (See attached link) Here is another link to pictures of this jail which by the way was operational until it was closed in 1991. The inmates were bunked 3 sometimes 4 to a cell. And looking at the size of these cells I don't know how these people were not killing each other. This is just an interesting piece of history I wanted to share with everyone out here. Here is the link to pictures of the building: http://www.oboylephoto.com/jail/index.htm Here is the link to the story of the building becoming apartments: http://www.salemnews.com/punews/local_story_111234938.html
The pictures are beautiful of the old jail!! I've driven by it many times in my travels around the North Shore area. I love Gloucester, Salem & Rockport! Its nice to see they are going to keep the outside appearance, I think it will pretty neat when its done after what I read in the article.
Gloucester has lost a lot over the last 5 years ago, I don't think its quite like it once was as far as the fishing industry goes.
