Please answer my silly question. I bought my three initials to go on my car (like so many others I've seen). But the shop that sold them to me told me that my first and last name should be the smaller decals and the big decal is my middle initial. I thought it strange as I always thought the bigger initial was the last name and hubby is telling me that as well. So, which is correct? You'd think the shop would know but if they are wrong I'll just take them back and swap out. Thanks!

YES center & larger is for your LAST NAME Initial!

That's always been my understanding, as well. The last initial is always the largest and in the middle. Obviously the first initial is to the left and the middle initial is to the right.

I've always thought that the last name went in the middle and was the larger initial. I did some checking online and here is what I found and a link to the site..

"A monogram can be a whole name or just initials. Rules are now flexible, but for the purist, there are a few standards. First of all, monograms with three initials are generally in the Victorian format of first initial, large last initial, middle initial. Then there is the male monogram of same-size letters first, middle, last initials. Married monograms usually consist of the bride’s first initial on the left, the groom’s first initial on the right, and the joint last name initial larger in the center, similar to the Victorian female version. A married woman would use her first name initial on the left, maiden initial on the right, then new last initial larger in the center."

Maybe you should print it out and take it to the store with you and educate the store clerk.

According to what I found, a married woman could also put her maiden initial to the right, instead of the middle name initial.

I have my last name as the large initial in the middle of all my monograms, however mine could almost be either way :) My last initial is now what my middle initial was and my middle initial is now what my last initial was....Make sense??

  8. I'm married, and I always use my maiden name rather than my middle name. And yes, the last name initial goes in the middle.

Thanks! Guess I'll be making a trip up to the store this week to swap out letters!
