Swine Flu??? The only reason I bring this up is b/c we do have a fairly large Mexican migrant population here. I'm VERY worried about the schools. I have a daughter who has a friend in her class that she's w/ all day. Well, she told me she is leaving for Mexico soon and then coming back. What?!?! That country is practically on quarantine as it is. I don't usually worry about these "epidemics" when they come about but this one is concerning and the fact that my daughter is going to be around someone that may have the potential to come in contact w/ people there scares me. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I'm hoping my daughter has mixed up info but these two are very close friends. Does it make sense to go visit a country that is having issues w/ such an infectious disease and then come back? This is more a curiosity question than anything else. Just concerned especially after they just hospitalized a British Airways pilot coming back from Mexico w/ flu like symptoms. He was just doing his job as part of the crew. They did say he is responding to antibiotics though which is good. So far, just TX and CA seem to have been infected but sounds like it is very easily airborne. Does anyone know any more info? Again, just curious as it seems my daughter has a very good friend that is going to Mexico soon. She said her whole family is going and I know they have another child at my other kids' school. I'm not trying to panic anyone so please don't get me wrong here. Just really want to know if there is more info out there than what I've read and if you think it would be "safe" for my daughter to be around her once she is home. How long a time period do you think should pass? Again, I hope that "soon" in this other child's eyes is different than my definition of "soon." Thanks and I"d love to hear what others think of this whole swine flu deal. stephanie--mom to 7
Yes I was thinking about that also. It is very scary when you hear of these types of airborne illnesses and that there is seemingly a source of where the illness originated from. It is even more disturbing to think that this can spread very rapidly and that there is really no way to know weather you have come in contact with someone or something that may be carrying the disease. It kind of makes me want to keep the kiddies home from school till the all clear bell is sounded.
Probably much more likely to get it from someone like me who is exposed to hundreds of people a week in a small tube, and then exposed to hundreds of people from different parts of this country and others outside of that tube.
:ack:Heck yes I have been thinking about it all weekend! I even asked a girl this morning at work if she had been around pigs or mexicans bc she has a horrible nasty cold and needs to be at home, but thats another story!:twisted::ack::twisted::twisted:
I told my kids this morning to wash their hands as often as they could and to stay away from anyone that's sick.
I have been out of the loop all weekend, someone enlighten me please? I saw a small article on wral about it, but it listed 5 states (ours wasn't one) as being infected with this. What do I need to know??? Shoot - my oldest son had 10 ticks on him yesterday, I think I'm more concerned about him getting Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever or Lyme Disease right now!!!
That's the article .... Other than Dr. Engel sounding like a complete idiot ... it's a good article. Yes my opinion ... and I am one of the: "As sure as spring erupts in North Carolina, so do the Lyme disease wars." Obviously, I'm on the side of the patient. As far as the swine flu, I'm not sure whether to be concerned or not.
OK, let's see if I've got this straight: The state health department says it's rare because not a lot of cases are reported. Therefore, doctors cannot diagnose it based on symptoms, they have to rely on tests. But the tests are unreliable, so not a lot of cases get reported. Ummm, did I just go in a circle?
YUP. My Lyme doctor has treated me based on my clinical symptoms alone. Not some test. My tests said I didn't have it. Guess what? About a month ago, I had my tests redone ... and they were POSITIVE! And you also have to report it within 30 days of the test being done and sometime it takes just about that long to get it back. In fact, my test came back after the 30 day limit. Talk about being angry. So my CDC Positive test result won't go on record b/c I got it after day 30. In fact, I think my doctor didn't get it until after day 30 either. It's very frustrating.
it's been a slow news weekend, that's why the media is all hyped up about swine flu. I wouldnt go to mexico, but it seems a bit overkill to talk about it so much. yes we get it, its a flu strain. we all know since grade school what to do when there's a flu virus going around.
