    Clarification on flexible furlough plan

    • All teachers’ and state employees’ compensation will be reduced by an annualized amount equivalent to 0.5 percent for the remainder of the fiscal year.

    • In return, each employee will receive 10 hours of flexible time off that can be taken between June 1 and December 31.
Therefore, when an employee takes their time off, their pay will not be deducted any further beyond the .5% taken this fiscal year.

I work at Central Prison, and instead of cutting my pay, let's cut out stuff that we give the inmates

I hate the way they take an average salary to make it to their benefit. When they brag about teacher salaries, they go to the average that includes all the teachers at the top of the pay scale. It makes it sound like teachers get paid more than they do. Then, when they pass something like this, they say "Oh, it's only $75 for those making $30K a year." Really? Well, I wish it was just $75 from my paycheck. Instead, I'm getting cut the amount of my electric and water bills combined. My husband's looking for work after being laid off several months ago. Our savings are gone, and my paycheck doesn't leave room for extras. However, we keep hearing about new positions being created, with REALLY high salaries, to help "fix" things.

This just really aggravates me. The schools don't have enough money as is. The teachers don't get paid nearly as much as most govt jobs. The last place cuts should be made is in our education system. Just when is it that teachers are going to get to take the 10 hours off??? If they take the time of during classtime ... a sub will have to be hired & payed for??? Where is the savings in this? Their teachers work days have already been cut ... so I don't really see anymore room for cuts here. This is just STUPID!!!!

I'm sure they will make teachers take off on workdays so they can just stay late other days to finish their work...makes sense to me.

State employees don't have to take the time off. It's just a way of saying we took your money, so feel free to take 10 hours (if you can and your Supervisor approves). I would imagine teachers, some administrators and many upper management folks won't get to use the 10 hours. Heck they can't hardly get time off by using earned vacation. And now that staff is short and we've all taken on more responsibility, time off will be even more difficult.

Let me assure as a retired Superintendent with the DOC, the managers are being forced to look at everything that they can legally cut out for the inmates. I remember having to reduce meals a few years ago having to reduce meals from 72 cents to 68 cents. Also keeping the phones open longer so the state would get more revenues from the inmates placing collect phone calls home, keeping the canteen open longer hours to increase profits and boost sales tax revenues. It can be a real trying time to balance out what you can take away from them without a court somewhere finding you in contempt of a previous court settlement.
