Here is the CDC web page on the newly discovered swine flu virus. http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/?s_cid=swineFlu_outbreak_internal_001
dang! i would need some verification from the school and then yea.....i prolly would keep em home. just to save my nerves if nothing else.
If this were true, I think the school is mandated to shut the school down as in New York School cases. Don't know though. Trouble is, they have to "confirm" it and it takes days. By that time, it has spread to everyone else. My daughter has a friend in her class that is going to Mexico soon and then coming back. Little nervous about that whole deal. Then, there is a kid at Clayton Middle that was coughing and didn't feel well in school. Teacher didn't send him home or anything. Guess they think allergies this time of year. Worrisome part about this case is they just got back from Mexico about a week ago is what I'm told. Trouble w/ all this is no one knows. all we know is it is rampantly spreading and by the time they confirm it is swine, it is too late. The kids have already been to school. and I'm sure there are quite a few w/ the flu and don't know it is the swine flu. I'm worried about the whole thing quite honestly. Mexico is a VERY popular spring break trip for kids. That's how the New York break out started. An innocent trip for fun. All we can do is be proactive. And please folks, if your kids are sick keep them home!!! I have one child w/ many issues and if she gets sick, it is always a scary situation. This makes me ten times more nervous. America has survived many, other flus and pandemics. I'm sure we'll do the same w/ this one. Remember, this has only just started. Flus kill about 34,000 people each year. We are nowhere near that number yet. Hope we never, ever get there but still nervous. Just take precautions, that's all you can do at this point. STay healthy everyone and enjoy the weather outside. Especially when I saw a report on the news that a sneeze travels at 150 MPH and that you can pass a spot where someone has sneezed after a half hour and there can still be germs in that area. Wow that is something. All we can do is pray that this strain of flu will not affect this area. I did send my daughter to school today because I figured it just may be children saying this between them, the school has not sent home anything on paper as of yet.
I just saw on WRAL that Obama says school closings may be necessary. I hope this school is considering it.
If they have to close the schools because of the outbreak/ threat of this flu spreading I beleive that it is probably the best choice for the schools to do considering the chance that a mass outbreak could occure. Whether the possibilities are remote or not, It is better to stay on guard. I know that this could affect a lot of working people to have their kids @ home, but I believe in the best interest of public health the employers of people affected by the inconvience/ hardship of having to work or stay home, that an exception would be made.
My son started coughing real bad last night, and woke up this morning saying his tummy hurt and he felt like he was gonna throw up, and his head hurt. No, I do not think he has swine flu! But I did keep him home for a couple reasons. 1. When he gets sick, it usually goes downhill quickly, so it's just better to keep him home. 2. He's coughing constantly, didn't really want him spreading those germs all over the school today and getting everyone else sick (your're welcome!) 3. I figured people would probably think he DOES have swine flu and freak out, so better to just keep him home. My son gets sick every single year at this time, he was in the ER dehydrated last year this same exact week, he's been sick on his bday in May before, he always gets sinus infections at this time, and even though I've been giving him his allergy meds to try to beat it, it looks like the spring still got the best of him...poor guy. And if anyone is going to catch the swine flu, it will be him, I swear he catches things that aren't even contagious. But if anyone does hear of someone in West View that has swine flu, please let me know!
I went to Lowes to get ready for all this, got several rolls of the poly wrap and all the duct tape to wrap my house in to seal it up..
"A probable case of swine flu has prompted the closing of a North Side [Chicago] elementary school for at least two days." http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/04/could-swine-flu-cause-a-n-side-school-to-close.html
They said it will be just a matter of time before it reaches all the states. It's up to 10 states already! That is spreading really fast. Prepare for the worst but always hope for the best. Definitely getting some entertainment for the kids & putting it away. If the schools were to close, I don't want to lose my mind--LOL. Worst case scenario, whatever I buy can be used for birthday gifts later on. Seriously though, just trying to keep the kids calm b/c everyone is talking about it. Media seems to be causing even more of a panic than we need right now. Precautions are one thing but paranoia is another. Good luck everyone and I promise not to send mine to school sick. I'm doing my part. Got a half gallon of Crown at the house that I partake of daily to keep the germs at bay. And once that's gone I'll buy another....or maybe hit up a friend for some shine. Craig
Hey, as long as you have a plan Craig...LOL. Definitely have to remember the alcohol. We used to always have hurricane parties at the coast. People would get all worked up w/ what the media was saying and then a sense of calm after the party...ahh, drinking cures what ails you. too bad the kids would be stuck at home w/ us during whatever castrophe may arise next. Flu, hurricane, natural disaster, etc. I say we just all plan a big block party before we're all stuck inside! Stephanie--mom to 7
I hope they are just jumping the gun on this. A few years ago, all we heard about was "bird flu" and don't remember much coming of that. WHO just upped the threat alert, but I am still not convinced.
