If more people start dying from it and it doesn't appear treatable I will really start to get worried. I do think that the children need to be protected no matter what because it appears to be infecting a great number of them. (The first case was a 5 year old).

The outbreak of disease in people caused by a new influenza virus of swine origin continues to grow in the United States and internationally. Today, CDC reports additional confirmed human infections, hospitalizations and the nation’s first fatality from this outbreak. The more recent illnesses and the reported death suggest that a pattern of more severe illness associated with this virus may be emerging in the U.S. Most people will not have immunity to this new virus and, as it continues to spread, more cases, more hospitalizations and more deaths are expected in the coming days and weeks.

An estimated one third of the world's population (or ≈500 million persons) were infected and had clinically apparent illnesses (1,2) during the 1918–1919 influenza pandemic. The disease was exceptionally severe. Case-fatality rates were >2.5%, compared to <0.1% in other influenza pandemics (3,4). Total deaths were estimated at ≈50 million (5–7) and were arguably as high as 100 million (7).

The impact of this pandemic was not limited to 1918–1919. All influenza A pandemics since that time, and indeed almost all cases of influenza A worldwide (excepting human infections from avian viruses such as H5N1 and H7N7), have been caused by descendants of the 1918 virus, including "drifted" H1N1 viruses and reassorted H2N2 and H3N2 viruses. The latter are composed of key genes from the 1918 virus, updated by subsequently incorporated avian influenza genes that code for novel surface proteins, making the 1918 virus indeed the "mother" of all pandemics.

While I believe it is wise to be concerned about the swine flu and take the precautions, I really do not think it is wise to have a fear of people who are from Mexico. Especially little ones who attend school. This sends the message to our children that it is the children from Mexico causing this and I am sure this cannot be fun for those kids. We should know better. When we show fear about something are children also panic and they react a little more harsher. These are just kids after all. I am sure the school will notify people so you do not have to say to your kids stay away from a certain group of people I try to teach mine to stay 3 ft from all people and wash your hands. Afterall it could be your neighbor or best friend who gives it to you!!!! Think of those kids! Also I am sure if those kids are in school chances are they have not been to Mexico in awahile!! If my child was afraid that it was just a certain group of people had it she would think they all had swine flu too and tel me they did because that is what she thought. Give the school a bit of credit. Do you realizes other countries are blaming America for this as they do everything(what would you do if your child went to a school and they treated her like she was a disease because she was from another country. Have a little compassion for those kids!!

The media did that for us, making us feel that is where it's from so they are to blame. I haven't gotten anything from the school yet, but at work we have a few things that we are going to do for the associates if it comes to be worse then what it is.
I personally haven't said anything to my daughter about it cause it hasn't started around here and hopfully won't..

Consider this: Every year in this country, 36,000 people die from regular seasonal flu. So far, 1 person has died from swine flu, or H1N1 virus. We need to take precautions all the time - hand washing, etc.

:iagree: We have Mexican relatives and my some of my daughter's best friends' are Mexican, and I certainly don't point fingers at them or stay away from them because of the Swine Flu. I wouldn't stay away from them any more than I would anyone else unless they were sick!
