Allergies? Blood shot eyes...

My dog has allergies that make him lick and gnaw on his paws (they get red and sore) that the vet has given him meds for. I have noticed that sometimes his eyes look very bloodshot and was wondering if that is just the allergies as well (since human allergies can cause that). Since i just lost my other dog so recently I am hyper worried about this one and wanted to see if anyone else's pup had experienced this.

It def could be allergies. My Elvis was on 2 prescription Meds twice a day bc his allergies were so severe. My Lab takes 2 benedryl twice a day and it works great for her nose and eyes!

my cat has a similar allergy but to date the only thing the vet has suggested are steroids. (which I know are not good long term) Can cats take benedryl too?

I believe so but I would ask the vet. With dogs, the rule of thumb is 1 mg per pound. Benedryl also helped my niece's dog who would tear his paws up licking. He stopped after being put on Benedryl. I buy it in bulk in generic!

My former cocker spaniel also licked and chewed her paws. She also tended to have bloodshot eyes and we were told it was all allergies. I would talk with your vet; ours said it could even be a food allergy and we did find after changing dog food they didn't seem as severe.
