We are staying in Colington Harbour(around Kill Devil Hills) on the sound front for warmer, calmer water this year and it is my first time ever not on the beach. At first I was really excited b/c we are staying in a quiet residential area in a beautiful house with great views but now I am sort of freaking out about the beach access being farther away. Is anyone familiar with this area and activities? Hatt? Thanks in advance for reassurance.

Sorry, Pickle, but I prefer Carteret County.

The only time I go to the KDH area is passing through, or researching/photography for publication. I will tell you that breakfast at the Magnolia Grill ( 408 Queen Elizabeth Ave, Manteo, NC 27954 ..(252) 475-9787 ) offers a brekfast that's almost worth the drive from here. It I was within 30 miles of Manteo, that'd be the first place I'd go to for breakfast)

Good Luck! And, thanks for keeping your tourist dollars home in NC. 8)

I stayed on Collington Harbour every year for about 8 summers straight as a kid from about 8-16. There is a private beach on the sound to relax on as well. It's about 15 miutes to the ocean but I did not mind and never felt like I was missing out. You are pretty much right in the middle of all the 'action' when you get out to the memorial there. You will love it.

I grew up closer to the Nags Head area but Carteret County is what I am used to myself! We'll probably check out the Magnolia Grill, thanks.

Thanks for telling me that! I just want to relax and fish but I was worried about DD #1 having a good time-preteen and has a tendency to flip flop on her preferences. It really looks like a beautiful area, though.
