Child Injured In School Bus Mishap A 5 year-old girl is recovering from injuries after being dragged by her school bus. It happened Tuesday afternoon off Buffalo Road in northern Johnston County, according to the NC Highway Patrol. State troopers said the young girl was getting off her bus when the driver closed the door catching a strap to a book bag that she was wearing on her back. Troopers said the girl was dragged 132 feet until the bus came to a halt at its next stop. The 5 year-old was transported to WakeMed for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The bus driver will not face any charges, according to the NC Highway Patrol. WHY IS THIS BUS DRIVER NOT CHARGED OR FIRED? MORE CARE, AND OBVIOUSLY TRAINING, IS NEEDED. USING ASSISTANT TEACHERS, CAFE WORKERS, ETC. AS DRIVERS IS BULLCRAP- SO WHAT IF THE BUSES ARE GEARED SLOWER- THIS OBVIOULSY COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE. WHAT IF SHE DIDN'T HAVE A STOP 132 FT. DOWN THE ROAD? MORE LIKE 1 MILE? WHAT THEN? MY GRANDCHILDREN LIVE ON A ROAD NOT FAR FROM BUFFALO AND IT IS A CUT THROUGH FOR A LOT OF VEHICLES TO GET TO COVERED BRIDGE- THEY HAVE TO CROSS THE ROAD. THEY TOLD ME THE BUS DRIVER DOESN'T SIGNAL TO THEM THAT IT IS OK TO CROSS. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT KIDS SHOULD EXIT THE BUS, WALK UP TO WHERE THEY CAN SEE THE DRIVER, WAIT FOR HIM/HER TO SIGNAL OK TO GO. I'M CALLING THE DISTRICT TODAY AND VENT. BETWEEN THIS AND THE CHILDREN GETTING A VEGATABLE LUNCH THAT DON'T HAVE MONEY IN THEIR ACCOUNT-I'VE HAD IT! ANYONE ELSE??
The bus driver.. wow make sure you see where the child is and goes when they get off the bus, I do find that a bit disheartening. The lunch.. well don't they send reminders home on how much money they have??? Is the child going to suffer from eating at least a veggie lunch? no.. at least they got to eat something. This shouldn't be an issue in my mind.
That poor girl! I'm glad that she's ok. I can't understand though, how a bus driver, or any of the other kids on the bus, didn't see her there!
I saw that story yesterday and was going................:shock::shock: That poor kid, she had to be scared out of her mind As an aside, I'm thinking of calling the school myself today. My son's bus was 45 minutes late getting home yesterday. It's happened 3 times previously this year and they don't call to let you know. You have to call them. What if he missed his bus and I didn't know it? I'm trying not to be worrisome to the school, so I waited til it was a half hour late before I called. Do your schools call you if there is an issue with the bus? I'm really not trying to be a PITA, but what if we'd had somewhere we had to be last night? Am I asking too much? :?:
Am I asking too much? :?:[/QUOTE] I don't think you are asking too much at all. And all of these stories scare the crap out of me as my child is starting kindergarten this Fall in Johnston Co.
We don't like our bus driver either. She now comes 10 minutes earlier than the earliest time we had been told to be at the bus stop. So no big deal, we get out there early. But some days she comes even earlier. Luckily she has to come back past us to get out of the subdivision, so if we hear her go past we run out and get out there for the next pass. Well, if she has to stop that second time she gets nasty. Really, do you get a bonus if you get back to the school early with no kids on the bus? In this economy, they should be able to find bus drivers that can do the job right, and maybe even with a smile on their face. It's a paying job after all, and those are pretty hard to come by. :banghead:
I don't know what school your son goes to, but I know that a lot of the elementary schools around here share their buses with the high and middle schools. So often times kids are out of school, and just waiting for their bus to arrive from finishing their other route.
According to my son, they had a sub and a different bus altogether. OK.........so if you KNOW there is going to be an issue, and you KNOW which kids are on the bus.............take a minute to call. I know they are busy, but I am entrusting my child, the light of my life, to their care. I may start the car pool lane again next year. UGG!
i read somewhere that they would throw away a lunch after the child gets up to pay for it and it's disovered they don't have enough money- that irks me. With the lottery in place, perhaps there should be one game where the proceeds would be for school cafeterias only. i would play it. we should be able to come up with a better solution is all i'm trying to say and we need are some ideas flowing and someone to listen.
There are GREAT bus drivers out there!! I'm so glad we were lucky enough to have our bus driver. You should meet them just like you do your kids teacher. They are over looking your children. My kids bus driver even has my phone number. It's sad what happened to this girl. I don't know how the bus driver did not see this kid. They are not suppose to pull away until they see the child is safe. Just plain sad! As for school lunches: As a parent I keep up with it myself. They do send reminders home also.
YES, they do throw those lunches in the garbage - so not being able to give away free lunches is not an issue. Sounds more like a matter of principle, and I strongly disagree with leaving it up to an Elementary-aged child to bring home notice of what their lunch account is unless it is pinned to their shirt. So let's embarrass them in the lunch line and that will stick with them I 'spose. <rolls eyes>. As for the bus driver, how freaking much of a hurry are you in where you can't wait two seconds for a small child to clear the door before you slam it shut? WTH? Would she do that to her own child? Another reason my daughter will not be riding the bus when she starts kindergarten next year. If that were my child that this happened to, this wouldn't be the only news story you would see on the topic. :boxing: "And in local news, a JoCo Bus Driver showed up at JCMH emergency room to have a parent's foot removed from her..."
THROWING IT AWAY is what irks me... That's a waste of money . So not only would the school loose money if they'd have just given the kid the regular anyway, but they just did a REAL DUMB thing IMO by just throwing it away....like it's no big deal. I mean, why not give it to the kid to EAT IT rather then waste it?????????? Where is the sense of it? Your pretty much out the money anyways.......So go and do one better an throw good food away??
My friend has kids in a Wake County school and can go online at any time and see the balance left in her childrens' lunch money accounts. This eliminates the whole problem with sending notes home and places the responsibility on the parents, which is where it should be. You can't hold a very young child responsible for remembering things nor should the school have to continue to provide free lunches to those children who habitually show up in line without a means to pay for lunch. I've been told it's not the one or two time offenders who are the problem but the same kids over and over again. So, if Jo Co created the same online ability to monitor funds the problem would be solved.
I don't watch news much anymore, so hadn't heard about that poor little girl. Sad story for sure, hope she's ok. I still take my kids in the morning, but they ride the bus home in the afternoon. It still makes me a little nervous, but so far, 2nd year and no problems - yet. The bus is here within a 10 minute time frame every day too, so no problems there either. I think 2 days this year it was off quite a bit, and I was a nervous wreck! As for lunches, I didn't realize that's how it works if the kids don't have lunch money, but I do believe it's totally 100% up to the parents to keep track of the kids lunch $, not the parents or school. My k son brings home his note, my 3rd grader does not, so I have to always ask him if he has money. If he doesn't remember or tells me wrong, and he ends up with a veggie lunch, that's his problem, he's old enough and if he doesn't want to be responsible enough to bring home the paper with his lunch acct info, that's the consequence he'll have to face! But one thing he was doing for a while...I was sending him lunches some days, and he was secretly buying lunch on the same days (so he would eat 2 lunches!), and then when I thought he had money he didn't. What can I say, he was a growing boy! It took me a while to figure out what was going on, I thought someone else was using his lunch number!!! So now I just send him enough for 1 week at a time, it's easier to keep up with how much is in his account, cause he'll use it all up immediately, and I only allow a couple days a week to buy...I can pack lunches cheaper than the school lunch!
Contacting Social Services because of twice forgotten lunch money is BS. Social Services has bigger fish to fry than a forgetful parent or scheming child.
My main problem is that the bus route allows high school students a shorter day and elementary students a longer day. I think elementary students are in school way too long in Johnston County. I've complained before about my daughter being gone from 8am - 4:30, sometimes 4:45. That is a full work day in my opinion for an adult! Even if she didn't ride the bus, by the time I wait in that long carpool line and get home, it might save 10 minutes. Oh well...nothing much I can do short of putting her in private school which I can't afford right now. Sorry...just venting again. What time do the kids in Wake county get out? Does anyone know? By the way, our bus driver hasn't been real consistent either. The other day my daughter waited and waited for the bus. Finally, I took her to school just to find out the bus came really early. The driver never honks the horn or waits. If we didn't live at the end of a cul-de-sac, she'd probably never catch the bus! We get lucky because she has to back the bus up to get around the cul-de-sac. Still, I don't know why she won't honk if she's that early! I really like the driver she had last year. I don't know what's going on this year.
