Anybody have a student there? I would like your opinions and experiences - good and bad. Would you send a freshman to a new school for just one year in anticipation of one the new High Schools opening?
I have a niece that goes there. From what I get from her there is a "gang" presence. ... That's all I got. We took her to the Clayton 4th of July fire works and she pointed out several "bad boys" she went to school with. I was more surprised at how many she knew! .. At least they seemed not to recognize her.
I know at one of the football games, I think it was a couple of years back, their players were trying to fight our players and I think they ended the came a little early. I just caught part of what was going on because it was already near the end of the game and I was headed to the band room. My son had told me about it. I agree with everyone though, from everything I have heard from people, it is a rough school and they have a lot of problems there. I would not want my child to go there either.
<sigh> That's what I thought, I was just hoping for some glimmer of upside. If only that new HS would open this fall instead of next fall. Are there any alternatives in the Archers Lodge/Flowers area if not in Clayton HS district? I am looking out that way to rent something when my house sells. And yeah kdc the news... That gang fight was just in Feb, and 16 kids were suspended.
And it goes way back. I went there from Clayton Jr High in ...79?.. and I was warned then from my school mates that the kids there "would eat me alive". .. But they didn't.
One good thing is they will have a good principal next year. The principal at Dixon Road is leaving to go to Smithfield-Selma. He's the one I've talked about before that is wonderful. All the teachers and parents I've talked to love him. I've dealt with him before and he is a great principal. He turned things around at Dixon. Maybe he'll do the same for the high school!
Mr. Taylor, the principal at Dixon Road Elementary is being moved there next year. He seems to be a great principal, so maybe he will make a difference. Also- JCS is getting ready to implement a new gang policy that will be very strict to try to get rid of as much of it as possible. So with those changes, maybe it will be better next year.
I had a son who went to SSS. The school gets alot of bad press (some deserved, but most not) but he had a great experience there. He had some great teachers and loved the principal (who is leaving this year). However, Mr. Taylor use to be the VP there and I think he will do a great job.
When I was fingerprinted for my job I was visiting with the officer and they told me do not let your daughter go to Smithfield High! I have heard that I can request to have her go to another school. We live in Clayton and my younger daughter is in Clayton schools so it is a pain to have one in Smithfield. Does anyone know what steps I need to take to move her to a Clayton School?
I don't think one really has a choice cathy, unless a new school is being built and/or your child is an athelete or a 5th grader/8th grader/senior. If we could just choose, there would be some very overcrowded schools.
I found this re: reassignments. http://www.johnston.k12.nc.us/education/components/docmgr/default.php?sectiondetailid=18727
If you are a JCS employee, you can request reassignment for your child. You must provide transportation for the student if the school is out of district.
I know a teacher at SSS and she said she'd never let her own children go there...hers are very young, so need to worry right now though.
