OK here is the deal. I have a fern hanging outside on my porch. I have 2 pigion tryin to build a nest in it. I chase them out, lean out what they have started as far as the nest goes and these birds come back! I like my fern on my front porch, any ideas how to keep them out of my plants?
Good luck keeping them out! Same thing happened to me this year with robins. I shooed them away every single day. Then I went to set my ferns out in the rain a couple weeks ago and discovered a nest with 5 little eggs in it that seemed to appear overnight. Have since not watered so the mama bird wouldn't abandon the eggs. I tried watering just on the sides and water just poured over the edge where the ferns are so thick. They just hatched this week and I can't wait for them to fly away so I can replace my yucky fried fern now!!:boxing:
Pigeons? Really? Not mourning doves? Kind of unusual outside of town. Just keep throwing out their nesting material, they'll soon find another spot.
What is the difference between pigions and morning doves? These are gray and have some black on them, long tails and big!
I had a bird build a nest on in my door wreath and by the time we really noticed it, we had 5 eggs in there. What is bad is all the bird poop!!! I still have got to clean my wreath where they hatched and left. It seems that birds like whatever I put out, guess because it is under the porch, I don't know. I have had a few birds get in the house! Now that was fun getting them out!
OK, it is the Morning Dove. That is exactly what it looks like. But still, I don't want that much bird poop.
I don't blame you. Just keep throwing out the nesting material, they'll give up and build a nest somewhere else.
Believe me, I will! I want to be able to sit out on my porch without worry of bird poop or a bird trying to attack me! LOL I don't know how aggressive these birds are, but they are big and I don't care to to find out.
They're really not aggressive at all, and they are helpful in that they eat a lot of weed seeds. You still don't want them nesting on your porch, though, so keep checking and throwing out that nesting material.
Hmmm, I'm pretty sure I've seen those finches before! I was going more off of what the eggs look like-light blue and brown speckled. Aren't those what robin eggs look like?? I have a ton of different birds because of my 2 bird feeders out front so I really don't know. I just know they like that expensive food I get from Logans and I have to fill the dang feeders every week. And now they have killed my fern!! Don't they know we're in a recession??
try the dreaded moth balls... don't worry about those mourning doves... love their sound and I know them to be docile. Now the cat bird aka Mockingbird they are the aggressive ones, but beautiful songs... very smart.. you are safe around them if they don't sense you as being a threat. I have one that has been around a few years and is pretty cool. Noisy at times... they are known to dive bomb though.
Robins eat bugs, they don't generally come to feeders. Robins build a very substantial, deep, round nest, in trees. I'll look for images of the eggs.
