Going to PA in a few days........I usually take the route through the mountains. rte 52 to I-77 to rte 19 to I-79 and on in to PA. I like that way cause of the mountains. Has anyone been out that way and know of anything that may hinder the ride as far as road work or detours or anything??? Thanks in advance!

We just jump right on 95. We did the western trek a few times, but since we are right here at 95 (almost) it's easier for us.

Have fun on your trip, I'll be behind you later on in the month!

Not sure but I think you can pull up the DOT for any where and find out. Have a good time and a safe trip.

We go around the west side of Washington DC, then into PA through Gettysburg, hooking up with route 78. Not so much mountains, but scenic, and better than route 95. No tolls, and traffic is not as congested. It also depends on your destination. Travelling to Philadelphia is certainly easier via route 95, but since we travel to Allentown, our alternate route does not take that much longer (maybe a 1/2 hour) and much less stressful.

    Have a safe trip!

yep, you can google travel construction by State and it'll have the main highways listed and you can check the routes.

So do you take I-95 to I-495 around DC or is there another route to get off I-95 before getting that close to DC? We'll be traveling to Harrisburg soon. I don't mind I-95 until we get close to DC. The sooner we can get off I-95, the better.

We follow 95 N until the exit for 495. I have copied and pasted directions I found on Google map:

    8. Take the exit onto I-495 N
    Entering Maryland

    18.4 mi

    9. Slight left at I-270 Bus Spur N (signs for I-270/Rockville/Frederick)
    2.3 mi

    10. Merge onto I-270 N
    29.0 mi

    11. Take exit 32 to merge onto I-70 W
    27.6 mi
    12. Take exit 26 to merge onto I-81 N toward Harrisburg
    Entering Pennsylvania

    97.0 mi

Of course, we continue on to take route 78, so 97 miles is probably further than you would have to take, but you get the idea. You can also take Route 15 instead of Route 70, which is the road that takes you through Gettysburg; a matter of preference(Route 15 has a lot of stop and go traffic). Either way, we go this way to avoid Route 95. Hope this isn't too confusing, and that it may help you get some ideas to work with when you plan your trip!

This is the way I always drive up that way...

    I-95 N to Fredericksburg, VA
    Rt 17 N towards Warrenton (t-bones into Route 29)
Rt 29 N until Route 15 (just north of Warrenton)
Route 15 straight up to Harrisburg

There are a few lights on 17 and 29, but they're both 4 lane highways and move fairly well. Route 15 switches back and forth between a two lane and a four lane and can get a bit cumbersome (traffic) around Leesburg, VA and north into MD, but then it opens up and is a easy ride up. Watch your speed in MD, especially as soon as you cross the line. Watch the signs in Frederick, MD, you can miss the 15 N exit. Not sure what the total mileage is all the way up to Harrisburg, but it's around 300 miles to Leesburg (about 4 1/2 hours). Harrisburg is a little over an hour and a half up further.
