I think you can call and read the tag number to a Vet (or they could point u in the right direction) to link the dog with her owner. Good luck to you! I hope you reunite them soon!
I called the animal control emergency line- they called back and we gave them the tag#. The officer (very very nice fellow!) called us back with the name of the vet where the rabies shot was done. In the morning we can call the vet to find out who the owner is. The officer said if necessary he will come get the dog and also work on notifying the owners since they can be tracked. Hubby put our old crate together and she is sound asleep in it in our garage right now with fresh water and food. She is definitely someone's family pet! UPDATE- The vet knows the owners! I am taking her down to them today and they will handle from here. They also promised to make sure the owner can keep her contained properly inside and if not, the person I spoke with said she would keep her! I love happy endings!
That poor dog wasn't found, he was stolen. I met a lady like you the other day. Said she ran a foster home for animals and would go out daily looking for "lost" animals. I'll tell you what I told her - you haven't stolen a pet from the right family yet.
No, I don't go out looking for animals. I almost hit her her on a very busy road. I had to stop my car(speed limit 55) to avoid hitting her because she was just standing in the road. I honked my horn, she ran off. Later that night she was wandering around my neighborhood. She had just recently had surgery and still had sutures in her. She had a collar, a rabies tag so I knew she was a pet. I went door to door in my neighborhood and the neighborhood down the road asking if anyone recognized her. Nobody did. So I did the human thing and kept her safe overnight. I called animal control that night, they located the animal hospital the rabies tag was issued from and I called them first thing in the morning. They had me bring her to them (which I did and which was NOT near my house) and were going to notify the owner. Due to confidentiality reasons which I understand, they did not want to give me the owners information or I would have happily returned her to the owners myself. So don't accuse me of stealing someone's pet when you don't know me or the facts. I'm positive if I had just let the dog continue to run free she would have been hit on the road and especially since she had just had surgery, I felt it was important to keep her safe. I would hope and pray that if one of my two dogs got out by mistake and got lost, someone would have the same courtesy. And by the way, I did not even give my info to be shared with the owners so I wasn't even looking for a thanks!
Good for you! If more people stepped up and lent a hand to critters who are obviously in need of assistance getting back home, there would be far less bodies on the roads and embankments. Since the dog still had sutures as well as a rabies tag, it sounds like the owners obviously vet their dog, and while I hate to assume, it appears that the pooch got loose without it's owners being aware - or at least I hope so. Pay no attention to the post above yours - you can't fix stupid.
Thanks Zoo! You are right in that they had just spent a lot of money at the vet and this was an inside dog who got out by mistake and they were not aware of it. In talking to Animal Control, this time of year especially they get alot of calls where people go on vacation and have someone take care of their pets. The pets get out and the owners are not even home to know. The officer I spoke with had just taken a dog to the shelter whose owners were at the beach and was attempting to contact them to let them know their pet had gotten out and was safe. I can't emphasize how important it is to have rabies and id tags on all of your pets, even if they are typically inside all the time. If it had not been for this dog's rabies tag, the owner may not have been found.
Luvgoose, I am in your corner! Pay no attention to those who represent the ignorant. I hope to God if one of my critters get lost, you are the one who finds her! You did everything right, and then some...I applaud your good heart! I will follow your example if I have the opportunity to save another's lost pet! :hurray::hurray:
Luv, I understand your position and feel you did the right thing in this case. At first glance you appeared to be one of the furballs that just go around picking up animals they assume are lost. Kudos for doing the right thing. That was called for? It means nothing coming from you. You're one of the freaks that would put an animal ahead of a human. Get a life.

Don't sweat this guy, I had a run in with him regarding the Vick issue, and couldn't believe someone would actually support Vick and his position. I decided not to pursue it anymore with him because some folks just don't think like the rest of us.
"The rest of us" being the idiots. Right, I don't think like you. You classify animals on different levels whereas I treat them all the same. Breeding chickens with the sole intent of killing them is ok with you as long as you can get it extra crispy, but let's not hurt the poor dogs. Hypocrite.
